The Cold War. Dictatorship. A country, government, or the form of government in which absolute power is exercised by a person or group. Isolationism. A national policy of abstaining from political or economic relations with other countries. FDR dies April 1945.

  1. The Cold War

  2. Dictatorship • A country, government, or the form of government in which absolute power is exercised by a person or group.

  3. Isolationism • A national policy of abstaining from political or economic relations with other countries.

  4. FDR dies April 1945 • U.S. would be at war with Germany for a couple more weeks and with Japan until August. • The alliance with the U.S.S.R. weakened. (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics)

  5. Comparing the Two • U.S.S.R. • Communist • Government ownership of property • No free speech • No free religion • Opposition to government could bring about jail or death • United States • Capitalist • Democracy • Free elections • Religious freedom • Private property • Free speech • Respect for individual differences

  6. By Yalta in Feb. 1945 it was clear that the Allies would win. • Britain & U.S. Wanted • Stronger Germany • Independent nations of Eastern Europe • Stalin Wanted • Germany to be weak and divided. • Eastern Europe to be controlled by USSR.

  7. At Yalta… • Stalin agreed to establish broadly representative governments and free elections in Eastern Europe and to divide Germany into temporary zones.

  8. V-E Day: Ended WWII between Allies and Germany May 8, 1945

  9. Potsdam Conference July 17 – August 2, 1945

  10. Who attended? • Joseph Stalin – Soviet Union • Harry Truman – United States • FDR had died months earlier • Winston Churchill – Great Britain • Clement Atlee – Great Britain • (Atlee would defeat Churchill in an election which would be why Atlee would be attending.)

  11. Goals of Potsdam Conference: • Establish a post-war order • Issue peace treaties • Deal with countering the effects of the war

  12. Outcomes of Potsdam • Divide Vietnam at 17th Parallel because of operational convenience • South would surrender to Britain. • North would surrender to China.

  13. …more outcomes of Potsdam • Germany & Austria divided into 4 zones. • (France, U.S., Great Britain, and U.S.S.R.) • Nazis will be prosecuted. • All land taken by Germany will be returned to their native peoples. • Some revision of borders. • Germans would be returned to Germany from other countries taken over by Germany during the war. • War reparations paid to U.S.S.R. • War industries would be dismantled.

  14. …more outcomes. • Former Polish government would be returned to power. Officials would leave Britain to return to Poland. • All Poles fighting for Britain & the Allies can return to Poland with no issues. • Outlined terms of Japanese surrender.

  15. …Potsdam • Truman left Potsdam believing that the Soviet Union was planning to take over the world. • This sets up the Cold War!
