This report provides a summary of the accomplishments of the FGDC Standards Working Group in FY 06, including the endorsement of standards, approval of proposals, and challenges faced. It also outlines the next steps, including pre-public reviews and systematic reviews of endorsed standards.

Summary of Accomplishments • Purpose and responsibilities of the group • Promote the development and implementation of standards in support of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI). • Review and comment on proposals for FGDC standards projects and draft standards for: • Compliance with FGDC policy and procedures • Consistency with other FGDC standards and ISO and ANSI standards • Assurance that standards development is coordinated with State, local, and tribal governments, the private sector and academic community, and, to the extent feasible, the international community and that the needs of data producers and users are addressed. • Responsiveness to comments submitted by reviewers • Make recommendations to FGDC Coordination Group on approving draft standards for public review and final draft standards for FGDC endorsement.
Summary of Accomplishments • Current Status • FGDC Standards Working Group met in December 2005 and February 2006 • FGDC Standards Working Group meets when there are votes on standards proposals, pre-public review draft standards, and final draft standards
Summary of Accomplishments • Accomplishments in FY 2006 • FGDC endorsement of Digital Cartographic Standard for Geologic Map Symbolization, FGDC-STD-013-2006 • FGDC endorsement of FGDC Policy on Recognition of non-Federally Authored Standards • Approval of proposal to develop Wetlands Mapping Standards • INCITS L1 approval to advance Framework Data Standard for ANSI public review, pending satisfactory resolution of comments received with the INCITS L1 ballot • Chair completed interviews with several maintenance authorities on FGDC standards that have been endorsed five years or more.
Summary of Accomplishments • Emerging Issues • The main challenge is finding people to review and submit comments on standards proposals and draft standards so that the SWG does not unnecessarily delay progress on a standards project • It is hoped that the Geospatial LoB considerations for data stewardship and life cycle management will spur Federal agencies to support FGDC standards activities during the FGDC standards development process and following endorsement.
