After Napoleon, Europe started thinking of themselves as nations This period of history is known as the Rise of Nationalism People would have common: • History—social and political movements • Process of forming nations/ governments • Language • Culture—music, art, literature, dress, museums, food, symbolism, • Sense of belonging

Congress of Vienna • Met to settle the Napoleon issue • Create a lasting peace by balancing power between nations • Restore the monarchies • Stop future French aggressions • Quadruple Alliance-(GB,Russia, • Prussia, Austria) pledged to work together • Concert of Europe —meetings to discus problems. • Think: United Nations.

  7. Nations Rise • Germany becomes dominate country after they win the “Franco-Prussian war (1871) • Otto von Bismarck becomes one of the most famous/powerful rulers of Europe • Kaiser Wilhelm II fires him takes over! Develops army and begins to think expansion

  8. Italy Unifies (start 1849) • Many small independent states—had been ignored by Congress of Vienna • 1861—Italy unifies but faced problems of a wide spread, diverse nation • Turmoil for years—sabotage and violence • People immigrated to U.S.

  9. Hapsburg Empire • Old Holy Roman Empire—now basically Austria and Hungary—a multinational empire • Conflicts caused a split between the two (ethnic nationalism)

  10. Ottoman EmpireEastern Europe, the Balkans, N. Africa and Middle East • “Sick Man of Europe” Divided up to save it—not necessary. Angered “Ottomans”. • Serbia, Bosnia Herzegovina, N. Africa, Russia etc, etc. • Sick man became the Powder Keg

The Important Stuff we’re leaving out…. • Things are REAL BAD in Russia—starvation, bad gov, all the things that lead to revolution. • Democratic Reforms are made in England—to deal with all the bad brought in by the Industrial Rev • Women’s rights, • end to slavery completely • The Irish Potato Famine and resulting problems.

  13. More important stuff • Democracy grows in France • The U.S. Industrial Rev has US grow--and grow to be GREAT after the Civil War • (see map p 380) • People start to migrate from • Places where it’s bad to • places where there’s hope. (America)

  14. More… • European countries start to move to undeveloped countries to make them better—IMPERIALISM. (know this word)

  15. British take over India • Impress their culture • Discontent grows • Africa is divided into colonies • Disregard for tribal lines will create problems.

  16. The “Sick Man” becomes important • Muslim lands (Ottoman Empire) are Colonized… (some accept, some don’t.) • Suez Canal is built for European convenience. • Oil discovered… enough said…

More—you thought I was finished…  • China trade with outside world (Britain) grows • Through war (Opium War) and “unequal treaties” • Weak leaders would lead to those who would reform. • Although a RICH history, it’s influence come second in our minds to the World Wars. • They make an effort to stay isolated… • True influence will come after WWII.

  18. More in the East • Japan opens up and starts to industrialize and reform. • They grow in power and world power. • (We know where this will go…) • Korea sets in the middle— • what European country does this remind you of?...

  19. (Will she ever stop?) • The west moves in on the east and to the Pacific • Trade, transportation, power • France to Indochina (Vietnam) • US to Philippines • The Dutch into Islands of Dutch East Indies • Do p 432 #1-2. Brainstorm with partner, answer in paragraph form individually.

  20. The West looks West… • Early treatment of people in Caribbean, Mexico and S. America resulted in difficulty in developing the future. • Political and cultural instability • Dependence and oppression • The US tried to help • (Monroe(1823)-Roosevelt (1904)Doctrine —if you attack Latin America, you’re attacking us) • But they begin to interfere to protect investments… (Panama Canal)

  21. The U.S. Built the Panama Canal to help our trade. We controlled it for 100 years. This is Teddy Roosevelt—he was the President who planted us firmly in Central America…

  24. The “New” Countries made treaties to “protect themselves. • Serious distrust of everyone • Alliances were made • Treaties signed • Nationalism/economic rivalry sours the atmosphere. • Militarism fed potential aggressions • Let’s face it, it ain’t good….
