NEXT STEPS • AI meeting end June 2011; proposals for satellite telemetry of WNC • Prepare to raise issue of breeding WNC (drying of habitat, etc.) at crane meeting in China in 2012 (late May, Heilongjiang Province) • Contact researchers from eastern range in Russia and China (update range maps and threats/important areas)
NEXT STEPS • Investigate specific areas for WNC nesting habitat protection in Mongolia (KhurkhHuiten Valley) • OnonBalj survey data analysis, distribution of results. WNC occupancy rates across a significant portion of the breeding range of WNC in Mongolia. Complete survey, distribute and publish results
NEXT STEPS • WNC model---predictive. Used to identify areas to survey where WNC might be present. Links to climate change and impacts of drying • Identify PhD student to continue surveys • Model range and climate change impacts • Use model and rangers in the field to expand surveys
NEXT STEPS • Update Maps • Obtain Russian/China EASTERN range info. • Circulate a final time for comment • Post on ICF website, etc. • Draft and finalize report from the WNC inaugural working group meeting • List of potential funding opportunities • Write at least 1 proposal for funding to support 1 of the priorities identified in next 12 months

Used to advocate for policy supporting WNC • Wiki site, Yahoo group, Google group • Northeastern China and Russia: Contacts • Will contact the individuals named • DauriaInternational Protected Areas Meeting in China 2012? • Another potential opportunity to get together in person
NEXT STEPS (wintering range) • Future: exchange of individuals from wintering and breeding grounds • Support for proposals for work in wintering range from members of WNC working group from across the range • Wintering: sharing of info about WNC with other NGOs, working on social, economic, etc. issues
