Introduction • Mark Reichanadter asked me to “look in to” beamline vacuum hardware to select components based on experiences at SLAC • This will simply the integration of the beamline vacuum hardware with the LCLS and SLAC control systems • Provide economy of scale for procurement • To accomplish this task I have talked to: • Dan Wright – SLAC Accelerator Department • Carl Rago – LCLS • Bob Dalesio – LCLS • Chris Stone, Martin Semmler – MKS • Bob Willis – Helix Technology Corp. • Reviewed vacuum hardware choices for SPEAR-3 and SNS Goal for this meeting – Attempt to establish a consensus to use specific beamline vacuum hardware Eriksson, Rago, LCLS
Vacuum Valves • Beamline Valves • All-metal • Leak tight to 2E-10 torr liters s-1 • Bakeable to >200°C • Reliable • All-metal Right Angle Valves • All-metal • Leak tight to 2E-10 torr liters s-1 • Bakeable to >200°C • Reliable Recommended Hardware VAT Series 48 for non-RF applications VAT, series 47 for RF applications VAT Series 54, low cost all-metal angle valve VARIAN UHV All-metal valve: Part number 951 5014 – Mini CF Part number 951 5027 – 2 ¾” CF Part number 951 5032 – 4 ½” CF Eriksson, Rago, LCLS
Vacuum Gauges • Vacuum Gauges, common requirements • Measurement range: Atmosphere to < 1x10-10 Torr • Convection Enhanced Pirani (MKS) or Convectron (Granville-Phillips) for atmosphere to 10-3 Torr • Ionization gauge for UHV measurement, Cold Cathode (MKS) or Hot Filament (Granville-Phillips) • Need for set point relays to control valve operation, MPS, etc • Survive significant radiation levels • Sensors must be bakeable • Communications with SLAC/LCLS control system required Eriksson, Rago, LCLS
MKS 317 Convection Enhanced Pirani • Measures pressure from atmosphere to 1E-3 torr • Factory calibrated • Gauges and controllers are interchangeable • Radiation resistant • Bakeable to 250°C with electronics removed • Quick and easy to remove electronics, two screws • CE Compliant • Used at: • Daresbury Labs – UK • Soleil – France • MPV – Australia • Hardware suggested by MKS, not tested at SLAC – Suggest further testing before buying Eriksson, Rago, LCLS
MKS 422 Cold Cathode Ionization Gauge • Enhanced version of the existing 421 sensor (used at SLAC) • Sensor can operate during bake-out (250°C ) • Measures pressure from 1E-3 torr to 5E-11 torr • Uses LEMO radiation-resistant connectors • Separate ion current and high voltage connector (increases accuracy of pressure measurement, no need for Triax connectors/ cables) • Bakeable and radiation-resistant cables available • CE Compliant • Hardware suggested by MKS, not tested at SLAC – Suggest further testing before buying Eriksson, Rago, LCLS
MKS Gauge Controller • Display up to 5 sensors simultaneously (most common: 2x Pirani, 2x cold cathode) • Easy to operate • 5 set points standard, 2 additional set points optional • Fast response (15 msec analog output • CE Compliant • Used at SLAC Eriksson, Rago, LCLS
Measures pressure from atmosphere to 1E-3 torr Factory calibrated Gauges and controllers are interchangeable Bakeable Radiation resistant Good experiences from PEP-2 Granville-Phillips Convectron Gauge (Helix Technology Corp.) Eriksson, Rago, LCLS
Measures pressure from 1E-3 torr to 5E-11 torr Bakeable Radiation resistant Hardware suggested by Helix, not tested at SLAC – Suggest further testing before buying Granville-Phillips Hot Filament Gauge (Helix Technology Corp.) Eriksson, Rago, LCLS
DC operated = Long cable lengths, no step-up transformer Can control 2 hot filament gauges + 2 convectron gauges Process control w. 6 set points RS-232 or IEEE-488 available Hardware suggested by Helix, not tested at SLAC – Suggest further testing before buying Granville-Phillips Gauge Controller (Helix Technology Corp.) Eriksson, Rago, LCLS
Gamma Vacuum (formerly Physical Electronics, formerly Perkin-Elmer) and Varian are the preferred vendors for ion pumps. Both Varian and Gamma Vacuum have a complete line of ion pumps that perform satisfactorily for Accelerator Systems. Diode or Noble diode type are preferred (positive HV input) Varian StarCell Connector on mini CF preferred on pump Good experiences at PEP-2 Ion Pumps Eriksson, Rago, LCLS
