  1. LCLS Safety Systems AcceptanceJ. Turner, for the LCLS and SLAC TeamsLCLS Undulator Complex Accelerator Readiness ReviewDecember 02, 2008 LCLS

  2. Contents • List of safety officials • Engineering process integrating safety • A variety of engineering process safety examples • Radiation Physics (RP) • Analysis example • Handshake between LCLS and RP • How RP does business • Example • Brief Summary

  3. Safety Officers and Committee Chairs • Radiation Safety Officer – Sayed Rokni • Fire Safety Officer – Ralph Kerwin • Electrical Safety Officer – Paul Bellomo • Earthquake Safety – Scott Debarger • Hazardous Experimental Equipment – Keith Jobe • Hoisting and Rigging – Kenneth Fouts • Environmental Safety – Helen Nuckolls • ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) – Dieter Walz • Laser Safety Officer – Mike Woods • Non-ionizing Radiation Safety – Jim Sebek

  4. Beamline Engineering Processes Requirements Documents Engineering Safety Assessment by Committee or Safety Officer Peer Review Installation and Acceptance

  5. Examples Follow • Main Electron Dump ALARA Engineering • Main Electron Dump ALARA RP Simulation • Magnet Stand Hoisting and Rigging • Magnet Stand Earthquake Safety • Magnet and Power Supply Electrical Safety

  6. Main Electron Dump - Example This particular review for the Electron beam dumpline followed many meetings with and simulations by Radiation Physics.

  7. Electron Dump Designed for Rapid repair For ALARA, the main electron beam dump normally buried in steel is removable on rollers through the front wall of the dump pit. Details in ESD1.3-114 at: http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/lcls/prd/1.3-114-r0.pdf

  8. Intervention for Main Dump Repair Simulated beam went left to right for 30 days at 14 GeV, 2 kW, then wait 24 hours and pull front plug to prepare to pull dump. Red spot is the dump down in the dump pit. X-ray line is above the whole picture. Dose estimates for repair or replacement of the main electron beam dump are in RP-08-14. at https://slacspace.slac.stanford.edu/sites/esh/rp/rpg_group/RP%20Notes/RP-08-14.pdf

  9. Hoisting and Rigging Safety In this engineering design peer review, Hoisting and Rigging chairperson had already approved the design.

  10. Earthquake Safety In this engineering design review, the Earthquake Committee Chairperson was a reviewer.

  11. Magnet and Support

  12. Electrical Safety Walkthrough Electrical Safety Officer, Paul Bellomo had a safety walkthrough performing oversight. See LCLS Undulator Complex Commissioning Preparedness Document Appendix B http://www-ssrl.slac.stanford.edu/lcls/reviews/2008oct_arr_undulatorcomplex/preparednessdocument2008v1-5.pdf

  13. Electrical Safety Procedures Electrical Safety procedures are prepared before circuits are completed. One page of a lockout procedure is shown on the right. These procedures are necessary for maintenance. ELPs are in the SLAC Drawing Database at: http://mdweb.slac.stanford.edu/Doc%20Control.ODA.php Prefix: SR Series: 384

  14. RP Analysis 0.03 mrem/hr From Alberto Fasso et. al. in RP-06-09-R1. This RP note determined the orientation and shape of this access maze as well as other access mazes, ventilation duct, and cableways. 0.3 mrem/hr 5 W loss 0.5 mrem/hr

  15. PMD 1.1-011 is about Electron Beam Loss in LCLS, and contains tables of ‘design to’ specs, average beam power, and maximum credible beam power. RP Note RP-08-07, lists all radiation shielding based on information from the PMD. Beam Losses and Mitigation

  16. How Radiation Physics Does Business • Design – 47 RP Notes for LCLS • RP Reviews – Peer, RSC, External (Mokhov, Roesler, Ban) • Implementation – RP Field Verification and >50 RP Memos documenting inspection • Authorization – Beam Authorization Sheet (BAS) • Operation – Commissioning radiation studies, configuration control, etc. • Performance Review – DOE reports, etc.

  17. Verification of Implementation

  18. Radiation Physics Documentation

  19. Simulated Prompt Radiation Beam Abort Dump without and with lateral shielding Radiation Physics did iterative simulations working with beamline engineers. (Note RP-07-28 by M. Santana Leitner and J. Vollaire )

  20. Model for Simulated Beam Abort Dump Radiation Physics (Santana, Vollaire, Mao, and Fasso) working with beamline engineers, specify radiation suppression components of 120 Hertz beam abort dump shielding

  21. Model and Final assembly of Beam Abort Dump RP Model above, Actual installation right.

  22. Walkthroughs, Memos and Signatures • Radiation Physics – RSO Sayed Rokni (Walkthroughs by Stan Mao and Mario Santana) • Fire Marshall – FSO Ralph Kerwin • Electrical – ESO Paul Bellomo • Earthquake – Scott Debarger • Hazardous Experimental Equipment –Keith Jobe • Hoisting and Rigging – Ken Fouts • Environmental Safety – Helen Nuckolls • ALARA – Dieter Walz

  23. Summary • Engineering process integrates safety • LCLS and RP work together to mitigate hazards • RP business practice and documentation • Safety officers’ walkthrough to verify installation
