Hawthorne Studies • Studies preformed at Western Electric’s Hawthorne plant at Cicero Illinois in 1927. Elton Mayo did studies to measure the best lighting to maximize productivity. The first results were confusing. Productivity of the study group was increased whether lighting was increased or decreased.
Hawthorne effect: Subjects improve or modify an aspect of their behavior being experimentally measured simply in response to the fact that they are being studied.
Measurement: If you want to make something important to people, measure it.
