Gay Lussac’s Law

Gay Lussac’s Law. Joseph Gay-Lussac (1778-1850). Gay-Lussac’s Law: The pressure of a fixed mass of gas varies directly with the Kelvin temperature at constant volume. Mathematically, it is expressed as P/T = k Where k is a constant, T is the Kelvin temperature and P is pressure.

  1. Gay Lussac’s Law

  2. Joseph Gay-Lussac (1778-1850) Gay-Lussac’s Law: The pressure of a fixed mass of gas varies directly with the Kelvin temperature at constant volume. Mathematically, it is expressed as P/T = k Where k is a constant, T is the Kelvin temperature and P is pressure.

  3. Sample Gay-Lussacs’ Law ProblemP1/T1 = P2/T2 Calculate the new Kelvin temperature of a gas originally at 30 C, when its pressure is changed from 2.5 atm to 1.7 atm assuming constant volume.

  4. Answer (303 K)(1.7 atm)/(2.5 atm) = 206 K

  5. Sample Gay-Lussacs’ Law ProblemP1/T1 = P2/T2 A gas in a sealed container has a pressure of 125 kPa at a temperature of 30.0°C. If the pressure in the container is increased to 201 kPa, what is the new temperature?

  6. Sample Gay-Lussacs’ Law ProblemP1/T1 = P2/T2 The pressure in an automobile tire is 1.88 atm at 25.0°C. What will be the pressure if the temperature warms up to 37.0°C?
