  2. What is important in a relationship? • Communication – the process of sharing information, thoughts, or feelings. • How do we communicate? • Words, sounds, gestures, body movement • Because we do not always communicate clearly messages do not get sent properly • ACTIVITY – 8 volunteers!

  3. 4 Types of Communication • “I” Messages • Active Listening • Assertiveness • Body Language

  4. 1. “I” Messages • 1. “I” Messages – A statement of feelings and expectations that does not blame or judge the other person. • Instead of angering someone, you could open the lines of communication.

  5. 2. Active Listening • Definition – Focusing your full attention on what the other person is saying and, at the same time, letting that person know you understand and care.

  6. Ways to be an active listener • Show your interest by nodding your head and showing concern on your face • Encourage the speaker to begin by saying “Do you want to talk about it?” • While the speaker is talking, offer comments such as “I know what you mean.” • Avoid passing judgment on what the speaker says. • Do not steer the conversation away from the speakers problem and onto your own.

  7. 3. Assertiveness • Expressing your true feelings in a way that does not threaten the other person or make you feel anxious.

  8. 4. Body Language • A way of communicating information or feelings nonverbally, through body movements, posture, gestures, and facial expressions. • Eye contact

  9. Cooperation / Compromise • Cooperation - Working together for a common goal. • Compromise – the willingness of each person to give up something in order to reach an agreement.
