BLACK HISTORY: HAITI • Creole- and French-speaking Carribbean country • Port-au-Prince is capital • First post-colonial independent black-led nation in the world; second oldest independent nation in Western hemisphere • The only nation whose independence was gained from a successful slave rebellion in 1791 • Toussaint L’Ouverture took over and wrote a constitution
BLACK HISTORY: HAITI • Has a long history of dictators until 1990 when Haiti’s first free election was held • 80% of its 9 million residents live in poverty • Stagnant economic development due to generations of political and social unrest • Catastrophic 7.0/10.0 earthquake with 14 recorded aftershocks between 5.0 & 5.9 on Tuesday, January 12th

STUDY TIP OF THE DAY • Semester has just begun • Come up with a Routine and Stick To It • Use time in between classes to read chapters or start homework assignments • Sometimes the biggest hurdle is beginning the assignment • Don’t sleep during the day • Use daylight hours to do work • Sunshine makes it easier to stay focused
