Court-Ordered Integration Program • In 1970, Judge Alfred Gitelson, Los Angeles Superior Court, ruled that Los Angeles Unified School District operated segregated schools • June 28, 1976 State Supreme Court agreed with the ruling that LAUSD was obligated under state law to take steps to alleviate the harms of segregation • The District was required by this ruling to take “reasonable and feasible” steps to alleviate the harms of segregation

Crawford v. LAUSD • In the ruling Crawford v. LAUSD, on September 10, 1981, Judge Robert Lopez issued a final order which prohibited the use of the term “minority” in any manner • As a consequence of this mandate, schools were redesignated as Predominantly Hispanic, Black, Asian and Other Non-Anglo (PHBAO) schools

PHBAO School Administrators * Meet with PHBAO Community Representatives to: • Plan how information is to be disseminated • Meetings include advisory/school council, Parent Teacher/Student Association, Title I/Bilingual Councils, School Leadership Council or In-School Newsletters *Funding for this program was eliminated due to budget reductions
Local District Office Staff andParent Community Facilitators • Conduct In-service sessions during the school year. • Local District staff reviews the information concerning PHBAO Schools’ at a Local District Principal’s Meeting
