  1. Future Geoscience Employment and Student Enrollment (Keane) • AGI work with member societies to identify ways to improve response rates from surveys to geoscience departments: • Combine surveys (reduce duplication) • Streamline to improve ease of response • Encourage participation through member society publications • Explore development of professional master’s degree • Quantify employment in the geosciences

  2. Earth Science Teacher Corps (Ridky) • Systematically catalog and publicize • State certification requirements • Universities that teach teachers (comprehensive list) • Sample programs/curricula on the Web • Develop annual snapshot of earth science education Other Education Action Items • Identify members for study group to investigate developing earth science examples or modules for high school physics/chemistry/biology/math courses • Develop K-6 earth science modules

  3. Strengthening UndergraduateGeoscience Education (Tewksbury) • Augment “On the Cutting Edge” workshops - BT • Seek out and publicize success stories for enrollment growth and develop models for success • Develop strategies to increase the number of top high school students who pursue geoscience research topics • Help geoscience departments strategize to attract more majors • Connect professionals with schools that have active research/science fair programs • Brochure on needs for specific geoscience careers • Engaging retired Geoscientists in interfacing with educational environment - Ian

  4. Enhancing Diversity in the Earth and Space Sciences (Karsten) • Establish baseline demographics in each member society • Establish a task force to organize national marketing campaign on role of earth science in daily life • Create a state-based alliance tasked with trying to increase the requirements for earth science in high school • Scale up programs to support retention of students in pipeline -- participate in the MSPHDs program as mentors and host similar programs at society meetings More...

  5. Enhancing Diversity, continued… • Mobilize earth science community to be local agents of change -- develop concise information on diversity and why members should be involved. • Encourage rewards for outreach and service activities by academic faculty -- consider an AGI award or recognition for minority scientist or scientist who encourages diversity – AGI Executive Committee

  6. Geoscience Outreach (Martinez) • Earth Science Week (October 12-18, 2003) • Order kits (50-100 free to each member society) • Publicize Earth Science Week to membership • Distribute poster through member society publications • Earth Science World web portal • Identify member society resources to enhance site • Link to site from your society’s home page • Provide teacher resources on site (prominent link) • Collaborate and support AGI’s Origins television series and DVD project

  7. Constraints on InternationalGeoscientific Interaction (Folger) • Provide input on questions for survey to universities seeking information on scope of visa denial problem • Help ensure that recipient list is comprehensive • Assist with dissemination & interpretation of results • Other International Issues (Briskey) • Identify representatives for new AGI International Geoscience Advisory Committee (AGI should also seek members from international organizations) • Member societies that also belong to IUGS should nominate representatives to IUGS Working Group on Public Affairs

  8. Federal Budget Hotspots forGeoscience R&D (Applegate) • Join USGS Coalition • Identify mechanisms to convey AGI policy updates to your membership Oil & Gas Research at aCritical Juncture (Tinker) • AGI should develop alert for member societies on proposed cuts to DOE oil & gas R&D programs • AAPG will help identify corporate champions

  9. Future Vision for NSF Earth Science Research Support (Zimmerman) • Coordinate e-journal aggregates (GeoScience World, DataPages, etc.) with Geoinformatics initiative • AGI should coordinate industry involvement in Geoinformatics initiative

  10. GeoScienceWorld: An IntersocietyInitiative (Speer) • Review Business plan in the Fall. (all)

  11. New Data Access Opportunities (Fritz) • AAPG extends offer of help with integration and cooperation with DataPage efforts.
