  2. There is evidence of sales tax dating back as far as 2000 BC. Ancient Egyptians drew paintings about it on the walls of caves. The practice of taxing has been adopted and dropped many times in many countries though out history. In the United States has been taxing people since 1791, when it imposed an excise tax on Whiskey . During the 19th Century the U.S. government remained rather selective about what it taxed rather than general, allowing the states to determine taxation. Currently , only 5 states do not have a general sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, New Hampshire, Montana and Oregon. The State of Texas ‘ sales rate at this time is 6.25% but cities, counties, special purpose districts, and transit authorities, but specifically ( not including school districts ) may also impose sales and use taxes up to 2% for a total of 8.25%. However, there are many exemptions to taxable goods. I personally feel that taxes are necessary in order to keep our streets safe and pay our military but feel there should be a limit as to how much the state and federal government should be able to charge. I also feel that there should be a better way to hold the officials accountable to the use of the money collected.
