Special Report NuMI Target Updates Kris Anderson 07-Mar-2011 NuMI Low Energy Target Brief Operational History • NT-01: Developed internal water leak after a few weeks of operation (may have been related to a beam incident). Managed internal water leak using helium backpressure > water pressure in target canister from 4/2005 through 8/2006 • NT-02: Operated 6E20 POT with no indication of internal or external water leak (9/2006 through 7/2009) • NT-03: Operated 9/2009 through 5/2010; canister backpressure lowered from 23.5 psig to 12 psig 12/2/2009; experienced internal event May 2010 (internal water leak) • NT-04: Operated 8/2009 with 5 psig helium backpressure to align with pressure vessel code requirements and expected ANU operating parameters;operated for < 1 week with internal pressure event 9/9/2010 related to internal water leak • NT-05: Operation 11/1/2010 with 23.5 psig helium backpressure; developed internal helium leak into water system after 10 days operation on11/11/2010; operated until appearance of a large external water leak 2/24/2011

Special Report NuMI Target Updates NuMI Low Energy Target Operational Summary • Of the 5 targets thus far, 3 quickly developed internal water leaks and only NT-02 has operated with a significant amount of POT and functioned without evidence of an internal water circuit leak • NT-02 exhibited loss of ν yield (~15% at peak) which may be due to radiation damage in the graphite fin structure • NT-02 currently has a frozen target z-drive mechanism • NT-02 currently resides at CO/RHF

Special Report NuMI Target Updates • Current Activities- The Work • Target Hall Activities • • Have moved used targets NT-03 and NT-04 to TSB (empty TH morgue) • • Prepare for installing next target on module and resuming operations • Autopsy of NT-05 in Target Hall Workcell- Necessary to confirm NT-06 rework approach and procurement of NT-07 and NT-08 spare targets from IHEP • • Document as is condition with photographs and smoke leak test • • Cut off DS target snout (~6”) to expose water turnaround circuit and smoke leak test; cutting tool tests successful and ALARA plan in review • • Determine if other internal leaks are present • Reclaim NT-02 as a contingency spare • • Still leak tight? • • Install target z-drive input shaft • • Unstickz-drive (we think DS bearing block is frozen) • IV. NT-06 Retrofit

Schedule Estimate Special Report NuMI Target Updates • Current Activities- Timeframe • Target Hall Activities • • Not on the critical path for resuming operation • • Morgue is empty and module will be ready to accept next target by 3/18 • Autopsy of NT-05 in Target Hall Workcell • • Final cutter tests and approved ALARA plan expected by 3/9 • • Module with NT-05 will move to workcell 3/9 • • Document as is condition, cut snout, and smoke test 3/10 to check DS end as possible leak location • • Additional autopsy contingency thru 3/14 to check for other US leaks • • NT-05 to morgue 3/15 • Reclaim NT-02 as a contingency spare- ALARA Plan Under Review • • Start leak check of NT-02 on 3/8 pending approval of procedure and ALARA plan • • If leak tight, install US z-drive coupling and recover z-drive motion • NT-06 Retrofit • •If autopsy of NT-05 shows leak at downstream end, start removal of target core from NT-06 casing on Friday 3/11

NT-02 Path (Contingency Target) • NT-02 (if reclaimed) could be ready to move to Target Hall: Friday 3/18 (decision date) • Complete installation of NT-02 into chase, beam scan, ready for normal beam operation: Monday 3/28/2011 II. NT-06 Path •NT-06 rework complete 3/31 • Install NT-06 in carrier, survey and final QA complete 4/8 • Complete installation of NT-06 into chase, beam scan, ready for normal beam operation: Monday 4/18/2011
