Click on the following links to learn about the cell organelles. At the end of the lesson, be sure to test what you learned! THE CELL The Nucleus Ribosomes Endoplasmic Reticulum Golgi Apparatus Lysosomes Mitochondria Plasma Membrane Centrioles Testing Yourself # 1
The Nucleus • A nuclear membrane surround the nucleus. • Chromosomes are found in the nucleus. • Chromosomes are usually in the form of chromatin. • Chromatin contains genetic information. • Chromatin is composed of DNA Main Menu
Ribosomes • The main function of ribosomes is to make proteins. • Proteins are composed of Amino Acids. • These structures compose 25% of the cell’s mass. Main Menu
Endoplasmic Reticulum • The Endoplasmic reticulum has three main functions that include: synthesizing lipids, detoxifying drugs and poisons, and metabolizing carbohydrates. • The ER may be either Rough or Smooth. • The Rough ER has ribosomes embedded on the surface. • The Smooth ER lacks ribosomes. Main Menu
Golgi Apparatus • The Golgi Apparatus modifies, sorts, and packages proteins. • The structure is composed of numerous layers forming a sac-like structure. • These flattened sacs are known as cisternae. Main Menu
Lysosomes • Lysosomes are membrane bound organelles. • They are known for digesting proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. • These structures also transport undigested material to cell membrane for removal. • This process is known as exocytosis. Main Menu
Mitochondria • The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. • It is important for ATP production as well as energy production. • This organelle has a double-layer outer membrane with inner folds called cristae. Main Menu
Plasma membrane • The plasma membrane consists of the outer membrane that controls cellular traffic. • This layer contains proteins that span throughout the membrane. • These proteins are surrounded by a phospholipid bilayer. Main Menu
Centrioles • Centrioles are cylindrical organelles located near the nucleus. • They are composed of nine tubes made of a protein fiber called microtubule. • These structures are important in cellular division. Main Menu
Testing Yourself # 1 • The organelle commonly known as the “powerhouse” of the cell is the ? It consists of a double-layer outer membrane with inner folds called ? • Golgi apparatus, cisternae • Nucleus, chromatin • Mitochondria, cristae
Great try…but that is incorrect • The Golgi apparatus is not responsible for providing the cell with energy. The Golgi apparatus modifies, sorts, and packages proteins. It consists of flattened sacs called cisternae. Return to Try Again
Great try…but that is incorrect • The nucleus do not provide the cell with energy. Instead, it contains chromosomes stored as chromatin, which contain important DNA. Return to Try Again
That is Correct! • The organelle commonly referred to as the “powerhouse of the cell” is the mitochondria. It is composed of a double membrane with sacs known as cristae. Continue
Congratulations! • You have completed your Tour Through the Eukaryotic Cell. You will now use all of this important information learned in this interactive lesson to apply in the classroom. Click to return to the Main Menu to allow other students to learn about THE CELL!
