  3. To add –er or –est to an adjective… If the adjective ends in: • consonant + y • change the “y” to an “i” and add –er or –est • consonant + “e” • remove the “e” then add –er or –est • consonant + vowel + consonant • double the last letter, then add –er or -est Got it?? Here comes a quiz….

  4. To add –er or –est to an adjective… Quiz Time! • Add –er to “early” • Add –est to “red” • Add –est to “late” • Add –er to “happy” • Add –er to “sad” Answers • earlier • reddest • latest • happier • sadder

To add –ing or –ed to a verb… If the base verb ends in: • consonant + vowel + consonant + stressed syllable • double the final consonant, then add –ing or –ed • consonant + “e” • remove the “e” then add –ing or –ed • -ie • change the –ie to “y”, then add –ing • just add –d Got it??   11. -ible or –able? Words ending in –ible are words of Latin origin. There are about 180 words ending in –ible, but here are the most common –ible words: admissible compatible divisible edible flexible gullible horrible illegible Incredible permissible possible tangible terrible visible • Words which end in –able are: • Non-Latin words like: affordable, dependable, washable • New words like: networkable

  12. -ible or –able? HERE’S THE TRICK! (This works MOST of the time!) • If you remove –able from the word, you are left with a complete word: • Affordable = afford  • Washable = wash  • If you remove –ible from the word, you are not left with a complete word: • Admissible – admiss  • Terrible – terr 

  13. ie or ei?? Here is a simple rhyme to follow: “i” before “e” except after “c” or when sounding like “a” as in “weigh” • “i” before “e” = achieve, believe, brief, chief, friend • except after “c” = ceiling,conceit,receipt • or when sounding like “a” = neighbor, sleigh, vein • EXCEPTIONS (of course): either, neither, caffeine … (more on your worksheets!)
