2. About Me… • Educational Background • Dublin student K-12 • Undergraduate degree from Ohio University • Master’s degree from Otterbein College • 6th year teaching at Glacier Ridge • Happily Married for 3 years • 8 month old son - Brayden

4. Take-Home Folder • Please send your child’s GRE folder to school with them EVERY day and check it nightly. This is our main form of communication. Any notes or reminders should be sent through this folder or via email. • Any paper placed in the folder with HW designates that it is homework. Please have your child complete and return it the following day.

6. Your child will need an old t-shirt for Art class this year. Please send it in by Wednesday, Sept. 6.

7. Morning Meeting • Greeting – “hi”, “hello”, “good morning”, “bonjour”, “happy Monday”, etc. followed by a handshake or high-five • Class Promise • Share (follow our Share schedule) • 6 students each day • 2 minute share - oral and/or bring something from home • Group Activity (occasionally)

9. Reading Workshop • Reading is assessed by the DRA2 (Developmental Reading Assessment) • Mini lessons followed by individual conferences, independent reading and sharing • Reading aloud, shared reading, guided reading, self-selected reading, and practicing good reading strategies

10. Reading Logs • I will NOT be assigning a reading log this year; however, I do expect that students are reading nightly for 15-20 minutes • Students may read books from home, online, the library, and books from our classroom (found in their “book baggie”)

11. Writing Workshop • Writing folders & journaling • Modeled Writing, Shared/Interactive Writing, Guided Writing, and Independent Writing • Signs, Lists, Labels, Personal Narratives, Non-fiction, Poetry, Letters, Research • Practice using correct capitals, punctuation, inventive spelling, and correct spelling of high frequency words • Includes writing at home

12. Word Study • Small groups and whole class – based on the Elementary Spelling Inventory • Focus on high frequency words, vowel patterns, digraphs, blends, prefixes, suffixes etc… • Looking for transfer of knowledge to spell new words in their writing • Use mini lessons, word games/activities, and poetry

13. Math Workshop • Calendar • enVisions Math program • Video/Mini-lesson • Workmat/Independent Practice • Choice Time or Game • Share • Practice basic facts for addition and subtraction, Math games, and use hands-on materials

15. Science/Social Studies/Health • Classroom discussions, read alouds, and investigations • Guidance Lessons (throughout the year) • Project based through Share Projects at home – see handout • Trips to the Metro Park for hands-on learning • Guest Speakers • End of the year Field Trip to Stratford Ecological Center

16. Play Dates • If you plan a play date after school for your child, and this requires your child to leave school a different way than usual, you MUST send a note detailing the change of dismissal. Also, the other child involved in the play date, MUST have a note as well.

18. Progress Reports and Progress Book • Progress Reports go home each trimester (every 12 weeks) • No INTERIMS AC-Achieving PR-Progressing LP-Limited Progress • Please check Progress Book biweekly for updates.

19. Book Orders • Online ordering • Class activation code: (see handout) • Lower prices than book stores • A chance to buy books that match your child’s current reading ability and interests (“Just Right” Books) • Usually once a month or every other month • Adds books to our classroom library!

20. Birthdays • If you would like to send in a treat for your child’s birthday please send 24 individually wrapped treats that can be passed out by your child to his/her classmates at lunch! • If your child has allergies, it would be great if you could send in some “back-up” treats just in case

21. Volunteers • Once a month, unless there are Special Events or school-wide parties • See monthly calendar that will come home in your child’s GRE take home folder (beginning in October) • Volunteers from home will be emailed with ways to help throughout the year • Thank you for your support through volunteering!

22.
