How do I know the difference between that and which? • If it is essential to the sentence, then use that. • If it is nonessential, then use which and set it off with commas. • So, if you can take it out and it changes the meaning of the sentence, use that. • If you can take it out and it doesn’t interfere with the meaning of the sentence, use which and put commas before and after it.
