  3. Characteristics of Living Things Essential Question: What criteria do scientists use to determine if something is living or non living?

  4. 1. All Living Organisms are: • Made of Cells • the basic unit of life

  5. Two types: • Eukaryotic • Prokaryotic

  6. Organisms can be Unicellular • Carries out ALL life functions with only a one cell Multicellular • Many cells work together to carry out life functions

  7. Asexually Sexually 2. All living things Reproduce Requires a male sperm & female egg One cell divides into two cells

  8. 3. All living things Grow • Change in size, shape & structure

  9. 4. Living things respond to the environment • A stimulus causes a response • Homeostasis (Maintaining internal conditions) • Ex: Temperature • Ex: Survival

  10. 5. Living things obtain and useenergy AKA: Metabolism

  11. Are Non-living things dead?

  12. Living things can be alive or dead. • Non-living things do NOT meet ALL the characteristics of life, and therefore, they are not considered alive or dead. Still vital to earth.

  13. Living or Non Living??? LIVING!!!! It once met all the characteristics of life ~ It is now dead

  14. Summary Write a one or two sentence summary on the characteristics of life at the bottom of your Living or Nonliving Lab MUST INCLUDE ALL 5 CHARACTERISTICS EX: All living things share the following characteristics… EX: To be considered living, organisms must contain…

  15. Finish Living vs. Non Living Lab
