  1. Reading Strategy: Simple Outlining in World History

  2. Making Outlines • There is so much information included in textbooks. • Outlining teaches you to arrange information in an organized way and quickly identify the main ideas and supporting details of a reading selection.

  3. Directions – Simple Outlining • The lesson title will be the title of your outline. • The headings/topics of a lesson are the headings of your outline and are designated by Roman numerals. • The subheadings/subtopics of a lesson are the main ideas and are designated by capital letters. • The supporting details within main ideas are designated by Arabic numerals. • The subdetails within the supporting details are designated by lower case letters.

  4. Please note… • There are always two or more headings supporting each subdivision • Each subdivision is indented to show their relative importance • You can outline in phrases and short sentences • Sometimes minor headings don’t need to be more than one word • You can find many excellent examples of outlines in encyclopedias
