How does your media product represent different social groups ?
Main character... Angie Barrett in our media film project “The Box.” Cameron Diaz in the Hollywood blockbuster “The Box.”
As you can see from the previous slide , there is a split screen of a photo from our own film and another photo from a relevant film also called “The Box .” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362478/ In terms of representing social groups our main character , the mum is an average everyday woman similarly to the mother in “The Box” who is An ordinary working woman. The normality of this character is effective in terms of constructing the horror genre due to the fact that she is a normal woman which creates realism , initially adding to the idea that this could happen to any person in the world ,in some ways it evokes the surprised reaction of the audience at the end of the opening because she is so ordinary.
Differently to this , the unidentified man suggests he is of a different social class , the fact that he is wearing black and his clothes are untidy makes him appear or seem as if he is of a different or lower class. Interestingly his face is never seen so his social class and characteristics are based simply on audience interpretation.
Location The house used in the first scream film (1996) The house used in our opening title sequence.
Location is also key in terms of representing social groups and social class. The urban, domestic setting, similarly to the compared image chosen from “Scream “1996 is used to emphasise this rural setting ,reiterating on ideas of normality and verisimilitude. The chosen house like many other horror films such as scream evokes the general idea that a home is meant to be a place where people are safe or protected however ironically our film suggests otherwise , in terms of the man knowing where she lives, this immediately creates suspicion within the audience’s mind.
