  1. Plot Plot is the literary element that describes the structure of a story. It shows arrangement of events and actions within a story.

  2. Plot Components Climax: is the point of greatest emotional intensity, interest, or suspense in the plot of a narrative. The climax typically comes at the turning point in a story or drama. Rising Action:is the part of the plot that begins to occur as soon as the conflict is introduced. The rising action adds complications to the conflict and increases reader interest. Falling Action:is the action that typically follows the climax and reveals its results. Exposition:is the introduction. It is the part of the work that introduces the characters, setting, and basic situation. Resolution: is the part of the plot that concludes the falling action by revealing or suggesting the outcome of the conflict.

  3. Plot: Conflict Conflict is the dramatic struggle between two forces in a story. Without conflict, there is no plot.

  4. Types of Conflict: Internal and External Conflict • External conflict exists when a character struggles against some outside force, such as another character, nature, society, or fate. • Internal conflict exists within the mind of a character who is torn between different courses of action.

  6. Plot: Character vs. Character Conflict This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with another character, human or not human. • Examples: • A boxing match • Arguing over who won the card game

  7. Plot: Character vs. Nature Conflict This type of conflict finds the main character in conflict with the forces of nature, which serve as the antagonist. • Examples: • A tornado destroying someone’s house • A bear invading a camp site

  8. Plot: Character vs. Society Conflict This type of conflict has the main character in conflict with a larger group: a community, society, culture, etc. Examples: -Someone has been arrested and is facing a trial - Someone who speaks out against, or protests, something that most people think is good

  9. Plot: Character vs. Self Conflict In this type of conflict, the main character experiences some kind of inner conflict. • Examples: • Choosing to listen in class instead of talking to your friend • A young lady wants to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower, but is afraid of heights
