  1. Response to Intervention JCPS Response to Instruction & Intervention (RTI) for Early Childhood

  2. Important to Know: • RTI is a comprehensive framework, not a program. • RTI guide was developed with input from a collaborative team. • RTI is about using data to screen, intervene and ensure children are ready for Kindergarten. • RTI ensures that interventions are research/evidence based and not accommodations. • RTI is aligned with Kentucky Early Childhood Learning Standards and meeting Child Find Requirements.

  3. Let’s work through the process… • JCPS RTI for EC Guide • Sally RTI RTI Process Real Life

  4. Let’s work through the process… • Universal Screening • Below Level on Brigance in areas of cognition and social emotional development • Identifies 7 letters and 3 numerals • Can not copy shapes or recognize name in print. • Unable to follow directions in classroom setting during small/whole group. • All other screenings within normal limits. • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  5. Let’s work through the process… • RTI Team • RTI Team reviews Sally’s data during parent/teacher conference at school. • Early Childhood Teacher • Instructional Assistant • EC Resource Teacher • Counselor • Parent • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  6. Let’s work through the process… • Tier 1 Core Instruction • 5-Day a Week Participation in JCPS EC Program. • Creative Curriculum used. • Classroom Teacher uses small group, learning centers and multisensory instructional practices. • Instructional Assistant supports Sally during independent practice. • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  7. Let’s work through the process… • Areas of Concern • Cognition • Motor Development • Self-Help/Adaptive Skills • Communication • Social/Emotional Development • What are Sally’s areas of concern? • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  8. Let’s work through the process… • Areas of Concern • Cognition & Social/Emotional Development • Based upon Brigance, work samples and classroom observations. • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  9. Let’s work through the process… • Interventions are-- • Instructional • Not Accommodations • Research/Evidence Based • Provided Systematically. • Not People/Places • Are Strategies and Not Just Materials • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  10. Let’s work through the process… • Interventions • Tier 2 or Tier 3 • Use the intervention menu found on page 7 to select 1 intervention for cognition and 1 intervention for social/emotional development. • What did you select? • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  11. Let’s work through the process… • Interventions • Cognition—Tier 3 • Direct Instruction in letter and number identification skills. • Flash Cards; Earobics Game Goo • Daily with Classroom Teacher • Social/Emotional Development—Tier 2 • Small Group Social Skills Instruction • Second Steps • 3-Days Per Week with Classroom Teacher • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  12. Let’s work through the process… • Progress Monitoring • Used to determine if interventions are effective and the child is RESPONDING. • Data is collected, graphed and analyzed. • Goals are set based upon end of year expectations. • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  13. Let’s work through the process… • Progress Monitoring • Baseline—Where is the student now? • End of Year Goal—Where we want them at the end of the year? • Goal for Round– Progress to be made in 6-weeks. • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  14. Let’s work through the process… • Progress Monitoring • Type of Data: • % of Letters/Numbers Correct Out of 62 • Baseline—10% • End of Year 100% • Weeks Left in School—30 • Goal for Round 1—28% • 100-10=90 • 90/30=3 • 3x6=18 • 10% + 18%=28% • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  15. Let’s work through the process… • Progress Monitoring • Type of Data: • % of Directions Followed • Baseline—15% • End of Year—85% • Weeks Left in School—30 • Work with a partner to calculate the goal for Sally to achieve at the end of Round 1. • What would it be? • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  16. Let’s work through the process… • Document the Plan • JCPS Early Childhood RTI Intervention Plan Form • 1st page (front) • Documents universal screening data, interventions provided and goals/data to be monitored. • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  17. Let’s work through the process… • Document the Plan • JCPS Early Childhood RTI Intervention Plan Form • 2nd page (back) • Documents progress monitoring data for 6 weeks, results, IMPLEMENTATION RATE (90% +) and summary of next steps in RTI process. • Graph(s) of data is/are attached to plan. • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  18. What happens when… • Responds to the Intervention: • Continue until child achieves end of year goal and no longer needs intervention. • Does Not Respond to the Intervention: • Why? • Increase Frequency/Intensity? • Change Intervention? • Consult with Others? • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  19. What happened to Sally… • Was progress data kept? • What was implementation rate? • Was progress made? • Did she achieve her goal for Round 1 in Cognition? • Did she achieve her goal for Round 1 in Social/Emotional Development? • What would your next steps be for Sally? • Sally RTI Process Real Life

  20. Other Important Things to Know: • A variety of data collection tools are available to make things easier. • Materials will be on the web soon. • Electronic copies will be emailed. • Intervention Plan form will be available in paper/pencil form and an electronic version that will calculate goals and develop graph. • Less focus on paper—more focus on data and kids.

  21. Help is there if you need it… • Karen Weber, Early Childhood Special Services Coordinator (485-6033) • Rebecca Doyel, RTI Project Manager/ECE Administration Specialist (485-3318) • Harriett Mackey, RTI Resource Teacher (485-3318) • Dr. Joseph Bargione, Lead Psychologist (485-3498) Thanks!!!
