  1. THEMIS PROBE • FM2 PRE-ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW • INTRODUCTION • David Pankow • Vibration Test Director • University of California - Berkeley

  2. BACKGROUND • Boeing-Swales CLA complete pending Model Validation via Testing • Probe 2 - Sine Burst Performed @ GSFC: SAI-RPT-0627c (8/25/05) • PCA (prelim.) Acoustics Performed @ GSFC with Dummy Probes: SAI-RPT-0705 (9/30/05) • This Test Series is a PATHFINDER using FM Probe 2 only • 5-50 Hz Sine & Random Probe Tests, followed by Probe PAF drop • Four remaining Probes & PCA will be Tested in July / August • UCB will use SWALES Procedures with Minor Mods. • Swales support arranged under UCB Field Support Task #5006 • 8 vs. 6 Force Gages for greater slip margin • JPL (2 stud mt. - extremal) vs. GSFC (4 triax – avg.) Control Accels

  3. KEY TEST PERSONNEL • UCB/SSL • Mechanical: David Pankow, Paul Turin • Probe: Peter Harvey, Stuart Harris, & Themis MOC team • UCB Consultant – Terry Scharton (JPL ret.) • Swales: test - Roger Kraus, post test - Rob Eppler (TBC) • JPL / ETL: Instrumentation – Doug Perry, Console – Tim Werner • Dynamic Environments Observer (from Dennis Kern’s group) • Safety Observer • GSFC – As Arranged by the Explorer’s Project Office • Safety / Mission Assurance • Dynamic Environments Observer

  4. TEST FIXTURES • SLIP PLATE TESTING • 1.50” thk. Plate & “Red Ring” below PAF • Force Gages between • EXPANDER TESTING • Stray Mag fields surveyed at JPL / ETL • Armature stray fields are too High • 15” Spool to be provided by UCB/SSL • “Red Ring” Attaches to Spool • PROBE MASS DUMMY • UCB provided for Pre-Test Rehearsals

  5. ACCELEROMETERS • Instruments & Avionics • One per box, near a mounting foot • Bus Structure • Swales List pending under FSC # 5006 • FORCE GAGES • Eight - Kistler # 9251 Triax’s w/ 3000 lb preload (F.S  4) • Semi – Empirical Force Limiting Method per NASA-HDBK-7004

  6. PRIMARY TEST PROCEDURES • Swales: SAI-PLAN-0723, Themis Probe Vibration Test Plan (4/22/05) • UCB/SSL: THM_MINT_PROC_043, Vibration Test Plan (2/16/06) • UCB/SSL: THM-MINT-PROC-045, Probe Vibration Test Electrical Config. • JPL/ETL: 144-D-V-current rev., Dynamics Test Lab Procedures • STANDARD TEST SEQUENCE (for each axis) • Pre-Test Sine Signature: 10-2000 Hz at 0.1G, 4 octaves / min. • Quarter Level, 5 to 50 Hz Sine • Half Level, 5 to 50 Hz Sine • Full Level, 5 to 50 Hz Sine • Post / Pre-Test Sine Signature: 10-2000 Hz at 0.1G, 4 octaves / min. • -18 db Random: Open Loop (acceleration control) • -6 db Random: Dual Force & Acceleration Control • Full Level Random: Dual Force & Acceleration Control • Post-Test Sine Signature: 10-2000 Hz at 0.1G, 4 octaves / min.

  7. “BOEING” 5-50 Hz SINE SWEEP

  8. RANDOM VIBRATION

  9. ISSUES & CONCERNS • PCA Testing will be covered in the next PER • MECO Transient (3 stage) – GSFC policy is “qualify by analysis” • Random Pre-Test Data (-18, -6, 0 dB) will be recorded to examine Linearity • JPL’s practice is “Equiv. Random” vs. 5-50 Hz Sine Sweep • Allows for both Closed Loop Control and Force Limiting of Test • JPL regularly does 5-50 Hz Sine for Missions Managed by Other Centers • Concerns fully vetted with Dennis Kern, Terry Scharton, & Dan Worth (GSFC)
