Current Situation in the Alberta Settlement Sector • Some formally trained language instructors. • Five generations in the workforce; five teaching and learning styles. • Diversity of skills across language instruction. • Diversity of educational achievement amongst learners. Current Challenges in the Alberta Settlement Sector • Lack or minimal Intercultural competencies in teaching methodology. • Governed by a general code of conduct or code of ethics. • Lack or minimal supports for students with special or high needs. • Minimal supports to assess diversity of student needs.

  4. Recommendations Each English Language Department should… • Establish a code of conduct for its instructors. • Establish a code of conduct for learners (plain language and in multiple languages). • Identify in house skills and talent. • Create a process that works with interpreters, counsellors, language instructors, and assessors throughout across the membership. • Provide professional development for language instructors around teaching inclusive education and assessment. • Build on communities of practice to strengthen knowledge base across the membership.

Common Ethical Dilemmas in English Language Training • Fairness versus organizational expectations. • Confidentiality versus organizational expectations. • Collegial loyalty. • Error management. • Instructor Autonomy. • Instructor ethical knowledge. • Standards of support. (Shapira-Lishchinsky, 2010) “An ethical dilemma is an inner conversation with the self concerning two or more available propositions.” –Berlak & Berlak, 1981

Managing Ethical Dilemmas Questions to Ask • What is the ethical question? • What do we know? • What do we need to know? • Who are the people involved? • What are the possible actions? • What evidence, legal and ethical guidance, and/or personal, social, and professional insights support/contradict this action? (Chabon & Morris, 2004)
