  3. In the afternoon • Read Aloud • Math Whole Group Input Lesson • 2nd large block of play (guided groups take place during this time) • Snack • Recess • Library/Learning Commons with Mrs. Bolt -Stevenson

  4. The Learning Commons • Our class will bring home a book from the library on day 5 • Please bring back the book by day 3 • It is also very important to return the book bag that the library book comes home in. It keeps the books safe but it also contains the barcode that Mrs. Bolt-Stevenson needs to sign out the books • Students will also investigate with STEM centres during their visits

  5. Home Reading Program • Home reading program will begin in October • Folders will include a book and tracking sheet • Each night, read the book with your child and record whether or not your child enjoyed the book! • Return the folder to school each Monday, a new book will be provided • One of the best things you can do for your child’s literacy skills is to read with him/her daily!

  6. Poetry Book (Rhyme and Chime) • Each week we have a “poem of the week” • The poem is based on the letter of the week • At the end of the week, it will be sent home in your child’s “Rhyme and Chime” book • Read the poem with your child and do the practice sheet together! • This sheet will allow your child to practice the letter that we are learning in school • Please remember to return the duotang each Monday so we can add next week’s poem • The duotang will come home tomorrow

  7. Letter of the Week • Some students will be learning the formation and sounds of the letters and others will begin learning sight words for each letter. • Year 2 students will receive our “words of the week” in a small notebook • Each week, some new words will be added to the book • Practise the words at home, but please make sure you put the book back in your child’s zip bag as we will use it at school too

  8. Star of the Week • Each child will have the opportunity to be the “Star of the Week” • The Star of the Week will have special jobs and responsibilities throughout the week. • During your child’s week, he/she will have the opportunity to participate in “sharing time”. • On Monday, they will share their name, age and birthday • On Tuesday, they are encouraged to wear their favourite colour • On Wednesday, they can bring in their favourite book ( we will read it to the class) • On Thursday, they will share about their family ( please keep sending in family photos) • On Friday, your child will have an opportunity to share an item that starts with the letter of the week. They should come up with three clues for their item and the other students will try to guess the item

  9. Labels • Please, please, please, label EVERYTHING that comes to school. • It is hard for us to remember what items belong to each child • We also have many different helpers in our classrooms throughout the day who need to know what belongs to your children

  10. Appropriate Clothing For the Weather/Temperature • Your child spends quite a bit of time outside either at lunch, during outdoor education time or during phys-ed class • Please make sure your child has appropriate clothing to keep them warm when it may be cool or keep them cool when it may be warm • As it becomes cooler outside, please remember to send snow pants to school everyday (even if there isn’t snow on the ground. The snow pants will keep your child warm)

  11. Healthy Snacks • We have 2 snacks each day as well as lunch • Please make sure you try to send your child with a healthy snack to eat for first snack • Having a healthy snack helps your child get the nutrients they need to stay focused throughout the day

  12. Allergies • We are a nut-aware school • Please make sure your child’s lunch bag does not contain any nut products or products that may contain traces of nuts.

  13. Birthday Celebrations • Why no loot bags or food treats? • Loot bags create a lot of plastic garbage which is bad for the environment • Many children have food allergies or cultural/religious food restrictions • Loot bags create a greedy attitude (classmates ask, “What did you bring me?” instead of giving their best wishes to the birthday child) • If you would like to celebrate further, we will gladly help send home party invitations • Growing up and celebrating birthdays is very exciting for children! • At school, on your child’s birthday, we will acknowledge the birthday by: • Singing songs • Making cards • We will NOT: • Give out loot bags (please do not send loot bags to school) • Serve cake or food sent from home (please do not send treats from home)

  14. Class Trips • Please see Mrs. Chabai tonight and ask her for a volunteer letter. It is needed when you ask for a background check from the police department • We will have an opportunity to go on field trips this year • We are in need of volunteers to come assist us on the trip. If you know that you would like to come help us, you will need to have a criminal background check

  15. Communication Book • In each child’s zip bag you will find a communication book • This book is a good source of communication between the home and school • If we have written a note, the communication book will be open to the page with the note • If you have a note for us, please keep the book open to the page with your note. This saves quite a bit of time in the morning!! • The book should stay in the zip bag at all times

  16. Remind • Remind is a communication tool that allows teachers to send a text message reminder to all kindergarten parents at once. • We have been advised not to respond to messages outside of work hours. If you need assistance, after school, please call the school. • If you signed up last year, you will need to sign up again this year • Thank you to everyone who has signed up already!!!!!

  17. Website • I have a website! • On the website you will find: • monthly newsletters • calendars • educational websites • information about what we are learning and activities to try at home • Reminders (trips dates, assemblies, etc.) • We have included some FDK information for parents that may be of interest to you • This presentation will be available online as well

  18. Family Picture • Please send in a family picture so we can add it to the wall. • Children love to see pictures of themselves and family. • We often see them peeking throughout the day at the family tree. • If you don’t have the ability to print a picture, you are more than welcome to email me and I will print it here.

  19. Thank you • Thank you for taking the time to visit with us tonight 
