  3. More before… • Some Americans want colonies • There is no place to expand in America • We should take islandcolonies • Eventually America gets a militarybase in Hawaii • We trade in the Caribbean

  4. Helping Cuba • 1898- President McKinley is hoping to avoidwar • Extreme journalists call for war • Joseph Pullitzer • William Randolph Hearst • McKinley sends the USS Maine- a ship- to Cuba

  5. The USS Maine Explodes! • On Feb 15, 1898- the USS Maine blewup! • No one knows what caused the explosion • Yellow Journalists blamed Spain • They called for war! • On April 20, 1898 the US declared war on Spain

  6. “A Splendid Little War” • War lasts from April to August1898 • Only 460 Americans die in battle • 5,200 Americans die of disease • Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt has the Navy battle Spanish ships in the Philippines

  7. Rough Riders and Victory • Roosevelt volunteers as a Rough Rider • The Rough Riders battle Spain in Puerto Rico • The US Army defeats Spain at the Battle of San Juan Hill in Puerto Rico • The United States wins the war in less than 5 months

  8. Outcome • The United States gains control of: • Puerto Rico • Guam • The Philippines • The United States grants Cubaindependence • Teddy Roosevelt becomes a hero • America becomes a world power
