  2. Section Definitions • Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna: President of Mexico five times between 1833-1855. • Porfirio Diaz: came to power after death of Juarez and ruled Mexico with an iron fist. He also imprisoned opponents and made them fight for him. • Francisco “Pancho” Villa: led band of rebels who supported Madero’s ideas • Emiliano Zapata: Led group of indigenous peasants and called for reforms in the land. • Jose Marti: Urged Cubans with writing to keep fighting for independence. • Emilio Aguinaldo: A rebel leader who had cooperated with the U.S. forces against the Spanish, and felt betrayed.

  4. Who Is Doing It? • Spain • Great Britain • France • Dutch • Danish

  5. What Advantages Did They Have? • Gained more land. • Financial advantages. • Had control of the sugar trade out of Latin America. (sugarcane helps make rum)

  6. Tactics they Used: • USA- Bought the French property and equipment. • USA- Panama canal • Spain- Argued to give up Cuba, but US didn’t want Cuba to be totally free. • Imprisoned opponents and used army to keep peace at all costs.

  7. Revolts or Rebellions • U.S. made Latin America an American colony. • Spain felt betrayed, more than 200,000 Philippines died from diseases, not granted full independence until 1946.

  8. Outcome: • British gained control of: Jamaica, Virgin Islands, Barbados, St. Lucia, Dominica, Trinidad, and Bahamas. • French gained few islands of: St. Barthelmey, Guadeloupe, Martinique. • Danish gained one island: Virgin Islands. • Dutch gained: Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Martin.

  9. Affect on Today • Britain, France, United States, Danish, and Dutch all gained profit for sugarcane, and tourism in the islands they imperialized. • Led to the Spanish-American War. • U.S. received Puerto Rico and Guam, and purchased the Philippines for 2o million dollars.
