Motivations • Population loss in non-metro counties due to: • Increased efficiency in agriculture. • Preference for urban amenities. • Mean ages well above national average.
Research Question • What is the long-run potential for demographic growth in the non-metropolitan Great Plains counties?
Sample • Period Covered: 1993 to 2002 • Sample: 340 non-metro counties in 7 states (CO, KS, MT, NE, ND, SD, WY).
Conclusion • Existence of positive bi-directional relationship pair wise between net migration, wage and employment growths. • Employment prospect has a greater stimulating effect on net migration than does wage. • The impact of net migration on wage growth is more pronounced than net migration on employment growth.
Extensions • Include the rest of the counties in the Great Plains. • Include taxes and government expenditures. • Extend the time frame by including more recent years.
