  3. Careers in Aging Week Bright Future. Many Possibilities. Bringing Greater Awareness and Visibility to Aging and Aging Research Careers in Aging Week (CIAW) is an annual event intended to bring greater awareness and visibility to the wide-ranging career opportunities in aging and aging research. Universities and colleges across the world participate by sponsoring events at their schools or in their communities.

  4. Goals of CIAW • To increase awareness and visibility of the wide-ranging career opportunities in aging and aging research. • To increase university and college participation in CIA awareness raising activities through sponsoring events at their schools and in communities.

  5. Careers in Aging Week • Annual event, takes place first full week of April every year (Sunday to Saturday); save the date for 2014, • April 6-12, 2014 • Awards are sponsored by The Gerontological Society of America (GSA), The Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE), the Geriatric Social Work Initiative (GSWI), and the National Hartford Centers of Gerontological Nursing Excellence (NHCGNE). • Materials are sponsored by The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) and The Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE).

  6. CIAW Awards • Educational institutions are invited to apply for one of up to 20 $400 awards for their planned activities. The award application guide can be found online. • In addition to the 20 awards, NHCGNE will offer up to 9 awards to current NHCGNE member schools as well as Schools of Nursing from the following states: Maine, Vermont, West Virginia, Mississippi, New Mexico Wyoming and Nevada. • Deadline to submit is 11:59 pm EST on February 3, 2014. • Questions e-mail ciawapp@geron.org.

CIAW Awards • Make sure to follow the instructions on the application guide, and remember, applications that do not meet the requirements will not be accepted. • Review the sample 2013 award winner applications as well as FAQ, found at careersinaging.com. • Most importantly, read the application/review criteria.

  8. CIAW Awards • GSA/AGHE screens Careers in Aging Week award applications for the following criteria: • Interdisciplinary/interprofessional activities • Creative approaches to events and activities • Involvement of community agencies or employers

Deadline to order is March 21, 2014. • Note there is a $18 shipping fee for all complimentary kits; domestic only. Additional shipping fee for international and rush orders. What can I do on my campus? • Host an information booth to distribute pamphlets, brochures and other informational materials about Careers in Aging. • Hold a “Career Fair” showcasing the diverse opportunities available in the aging career path. • Invite a featured speaker or organize a panel discussion so interested students can learn more about the many career opportunities in aging. • Hold a symposia, paper, or poster session. • Screen an aging related film. • Host an open house, reception or luncheon so that faculty and students can meet and mingle. • Create an aging related game or quiz to test your participants aging knowledge!

  18. Who can help me make my Careers in Aging Week event a success? • Talk to your professors and contact the faculty and staff of your University’s Gerontology Program or Institute. There is lots of help to be found in the community as well. • Here are some great potential CIAW partners: • Your local Area Agency on Aging.
