HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW HXMA Wiggler Overview • Installed 2004 • Started operation January 2005 • Has been operated for about 6.5 years
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW Maintenance scheduled • Top cold heads (re-condenser) exchange - once a year • Bottom cold heads (shield cooler) exchange - depending on temperature rise • Compressor - replace absorber after about 18,000 hours of operation • Charge helium gas to compressor as needed • Check and clean water cooling system as needed • Service cold head valve as needed • Refill wiggler with liquid helium about every 1.5 month (two runs).

HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW Summary of replacement:
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW Observations: • Cold heads worn in specific area
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW Cold head wear on one side – 2009-09
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW Cold head wear on one side – 2009-09
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW Cold head was fine on the other side -2009-09
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW Cold head wear on one side – 2010-04
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW Cold head wear on one side – 2010-04
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW Wiggler stands with two top cold heads housing sit in 30 degree angle
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW Cold heads are mounted with 30 degree angle to wiggler vertical position
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW • Observations (Continued): • Oil contamination on cold heads, compressors and transfer lines
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW Oil appeared in the surface of the cold head – 2009-09
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW Observations (continued): • Compressor’s internal settings were configured for automatic re-start. • The top right compressor was only able to be started at 120 rpm – would not start at a lower rpm. • Ion pump is difficult to be changed • Gaskets may become stiff during liquid Helium refill - heat tape used.
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW There is no isolation valve between ion pump and wiggler
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW We have to plug the heat tapes to prevent leak from frost of rubber gasket
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW Conclusion • The wiggler runs at 1.9 Tesla successfully with the annual maintenance/emergency repair and regular refill. • The total times of cold heads’ replacement were met with the schedule in 6.5 years. • Compressors and transfer lines had lot more replacements than we expected. • The 30 degree angle seems to be a problem. • Extra work on heat tape – each refill and maintenance.
HXMA WIGGLER MAINTENANCE REVIEW Conclusion (continued): • Average maintenance cost is more than 3 times the maintenance cost of the BMIT Wiggler* • Frequency of maintenance is approximately 3 times that of the BMIT Wiggler* • Liquid Helium consumption is much higher than the BMIT Wiggler* *BMIT Wiggler has seen limited operation
