Special Education Resource Teachers (SERTs) These are qualified teachers who have taken special education training. Following their names is the amount of a week they spend in the special education role. The maximum would be 1.0 (Each 0.2 represents 1 school day) Ms. Cindy Lauper 1.0 (0.5 SERT and 0.5 Teacher for a Special Education Class- The Learning Centre) Mr. Justin Beiber 1.0 Ms. Kelly Ripa 0.8 Mr. Josh Groban 0.2 Ms. Katie Perry 0.2
In our school the SERTs support students in many ways. Here is a list of activities they may do: - Collaborate with teachers in planning, documenting and implementing program accommodations and modifications. - Support in developing IEPs. - Assist teachers with communication/interviews with parents as requested. - Liaise with external agencies. - Participate in SNC Meetings. - Co-ordinate referrals to county special education staff. - Co-ordinate and participate in IPRC planning and preparation. - Co-ordinate EQAO testing for students who require accommodations - Administer informal and formal testing (PRIME, KTEA) -Provide teaching support to the RCT for classrooms with identified students including teaching materials, resources, and advice.
Educational Assistants In our school there are 6 EAs. They support up to 40 students in either 1 on 1 support or a group environment. The number of minutes of weekly support is identified in the student's IEP's. The type of support to the student is either one of or a combination of : Physical Support, Behaviour Support, Communication Support, Safety Support, Social Support, Academic Support. Examples on next slide:
Examples of Student Behaviour Requiring support Safety Issues: Wanders from school, falls, hurts others Physical Needs: Toileting, feeding, breathing, dressing, lifting, medication Social Needs: Prompts/cues to interact, social instruction Behaviour Needs: refuses to follow instructions, noises Communication Needs: technology needs, cues/prompts Academic Needs: Cues to attend, begin and remain on task
Types of Classroom Placements Students who have identified needs may be in the regular classroom with the RCT, SERT or EA support. If the IPRC decides the student would benefit from a specific placement, the student may be placed in the Learning Centre for 51% of the day. They would likely do their math and language instruction in this smaller group then return to their class for their other subjects. The board does have other placement options including, a classroom for students with Autism, identified as gifted, and for those who require intensive social support in a social skills classroom.
