Web Analysis of the UTEP Social Work website Kristie Apodaca ENGL 3359 April 26, 2012
What is a Web Analysis? • An analytical report that tests the efficiency of a website based on different criteria – • Design • Usability • Multiculturalism • The process: • Planning & Researching • Organizing & Drafting • Styling & Designing
Planning & Researching • Planning: Five W and How Questions/Purpose, Subject, Readers, Context of Use • Who: My professor, UTEP students, Social Work students • What: Pro’s and con’s, what works & what doesn’t • Why: Should they use the site, or another source? • Where: On a computer • When: One is looking for a reliable source • How: Answer questions & concerns
Researching: • Research Question: Is the social work website one that achieves good design, usability, and multiculturalism? • Methodology: • 1. Judge the website on all of the previously listed measures • 2. Write down major points and findings • 3. Synthesize the results into a document
Organizing & Drafting • Basic Organization: • Front Matter • Introduction • Results • Implications & Conclusion • Back Matter
Front Matter/Introduction • Front Matter: • Title Page • Title • Graphic • Name, company, date, logo, etc. • Table of Contents • Abstract • Introduction: • “I tested the webpage on the following criteria: design, usability, and multiculturalism.”
Results • Design: • Attractive, modern interface (Ex: drop-down link lists) • Consistent color scheme & layout • Relevant graphics (Ex: faculty photos) • Important text highlighted (link categories)
Multiculturalism: • Avoided American clichés and humor • *No translation bar or downloadable software • No cultural-specific graphics • Simplistic, organized interface • Usability: • Access to information is quick & easy (links and search bar) • *Could use a links page of topics and FAQ’s • Available as a mobile website • *A special mobile template would be nice to prevent tedious zooming in and out
Implications & Conclusion/Back Matter • Implications & Conclusion: • Visual design & usability were successful • Multiculturalism can be improved • Overall, an effective source of information • Back Matter: • Reference Page
The Final Product • Peer review & revisions • Final draft developed • Lessons learned: • Research • Analysis of a webpage • Development of an analytical report
