5. Perspectives • Functionalist stress that groups work together to create a stable society. Schools serves such a purpose. • The Conflict Perspective sees socialization as perpetuating the status quo. • The Symbolic Interaction Perspective challenged the idea that human nature is biologically determined.

6. Symbolic Interaction & Socialization • Self Concept – the image you have of yourself. Others serve as the mirror for the development of the self (looking-glass self). • Role Taking – allows us to see ourselves through the eyes of others. • Three stages • Imitation • Play • Game • Generalized other – an integrated conception of the norms, values, and beliefs of one’s society.

12. Processes of Socialization • Total Institutions • Mental hospitals, cults, prisons • Military • Desocialization • The process by which people give up old norms, values, attitudes, and behaviors. • Destruction of old self-concepts or personal identity.

13. Resocialization • Once the self has been broken down by desocialization, resocialization begins. • People accept new norms, values, attitudes and behaviors. • Rewards and punishments attempt to create the new “identity”. • Also occurs as a child becomes a teenager, when a teenager gets a job, and as the elderly move in retirement.

14. Anticipatory Socialization • Voluntary change • Usually occurs in people moving from one stage of life to another. • Preteens observe teens (their reference group). • College seniors talk to people working in their intended job field.
