Introduction “Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.” Everybody has things that they have to deal with in their lives that can be very stressful. When you are going through a hectic time in your life sometimes all you need is someone to talk to. It can make so much of an impact on someone and can sometimes help clear things up for them. I always like being the one people come to with their problems because I like giving advice and helping people get through tough times because I’m good at putting myself in their position and seeing what I would do. That’s why I want to be a psychologist because I want to be there for people who are going through a hard time in their life and have them comfortable enough around me so I can help them. Mental disorders also interest me because I think it’s interesting to know why people act the way they do, or how they think or approach things. I will be researching the nature of work, working conditions, training, qualifications, job outlook, employment, earnings, and occupations related to the field of psychology to further understand my career choice.
Nature Of Work • Working with others • Study mental processes and human behavior • Understand and explain thought, emotion, feelings, or behavior • Treating severe psychological disorders • Providing people the opportunity to talk • Interviewing patients and giving diagnostic tests
Working Conditions • Mental • Inside their own offices • Own working hours • Schools and clinics are generally daytime hours • In hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care facilities = evenings and weekends • Deadlines, tight schedules, and overtime • Hours can vary
Training, Qualifications, Advancement • High school diploma • Masters or doctoral degree • License • Ph.D. or Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) • “People Skills” • Experience • Planning on going to University of Michigan Psychology Department • Take sociology class in high school • Take psychology class in high school
Job Outlook/Employment • Expected to grow as fast as average • People with doctoral degrees will have a better chance especially if they are majored in counseling or health • Opportunities for bachelor’s degrees are limited • Expected to grow 12% from 2008 to 2018 • Stay in Michigan for a few years for schooling • Move to Florida continue my schooling • Work down there at a psychologists office • More schooling the better, pretty competitive
Earnings • Offices of other health practitioners- $68,400 • Elementary and secondary schools- 65,710 • State government -63,710 • Outpatient care centers -59,130 • Individual and family services -57,440 • Earn my bachelor’s degree here in Michigan • Move to Florida and continue my schooling there • Earn my doctoral degree • First purchase: My own house, a nice house with 2-3 bedrooms upstairs “townhome.” Nice neighborhood typically by a lake or ocean in Florida
Related Occupation Counselors • Providing a variety of counseling, rehabilitation, and support services • Most work in their office • School counselors = school • Master’s degree • Held about 665,500 jobs in 2008 • Increase by 18% between 2008 and 2018
Summary Over the days I’ve spent researching this career I have learned that this job was everything I expected it to be as far as job responsibilities and the nature of work. I feel like this would be a good job for me because it’s something I’m good at right now as a teenager. I really look forward to being able to help people with their mental problems and learn about why some people act the way they do, and learn about mental illnesses. I’m glad that I have an idea of what I want to go into so I have something to work towards. It will take a lot of schooling but I think it will be worth it because it’s actually something I want to do.
