  1. Systems & Control • CAD • Manufacture & testing [CADMAT] • Computer Integrated Manufacture [CIM] • Flexible Manufacturing Systems [FMS] – wider industrial applications Reference: text, 234 - 245 systemsandcontrol

  2. CAD & CAE [Computer aided engineering] Given: Thu 11 Dec 08 Due: Fri 19 Dec 08 • CAD & CAE are used to model designs on screen. What then can be done with them? • What can CAD allow the designer to do? • What can CAE allow designers to do? • What is RPT? What does it do? What does it reduce? • What is virtual reality modelling? • Production planning. What are the advantages of software and computer-aided scheduling? systemsandcontrol

  3. Control of equipment, processes, quality & safety • Give 5 advantages of using control systems in manufacturing products. • What is a TQM system? How do ict systems fit in? • How can manufacturing to specified tolerances be monitored? systemsandcontrol

  4. Control of complex manufacturing systems • A modern manufacturing system is heavily dependent on the use of ict for managing workflow. How? • Name 2 types of visual recognition system used to monitor workflow. • What does management of production software enable the manufacturer to do? • What is feedback in a control system? systemsandcontrol

  5. Integrated and concurrent manufacturing • What is concurrent manufacturing? • How is data shared in this process? systemsandcontrol

  6. Open & closed loop systems - feedback • Describe a typical open loop and closed loop system. Give examples. • What are the advantages and disadvantages? • What are the 2 types pf feedback? Where are they used? Reference: text p251/253 systemsandcontrol

  7. Open & closed loop systems - feedback - answers 1. Open loop - No feedback status on state of output. If output changes, system will not change to take action. Closed loop - Information on state of output is used to control input. 2. Open loop - works with simple systems. Closed loop - works best with more complicated systems, where controlled output is required [either fixed or variable]. 3. Positive: output is used to amplify input. Negative: output is used to decrease input. systemsandcontrol

  8. Artificial Intelligence [AI] • What is AI? • What applications for AI are there in industry? • What role will AI play in the development of new technologies? systemsandcontrol

  9. Artificial Intelligence [AI] - answers 1. The creation of computer devices that can 'Think' and problem-solve independently. 2. In use with robotics - self-correcting control machinery - to give better sensory feedback systems. eg car assembly lines. 3. Development of manufacturing industries such as graphics [animation], computer-based control technologies, global internet marketing, batch & mass production. systemsandcontrol
