America: An Imperial Power • Americans always wanted to expand the size of the nation. • Manifest Destiny pushed American control to the pacific Ocean. • Americans now looked overseas for additional growth and wealth.
Reasons for Expansion • Acquire raw materials from new markets • Find new markets for sale of American goods • Show foreign powers the strength of US power • Establish military bases overseas • Belief in cultural superiority of industrialized nations • Belief in cultural inferiority of non-industrialized societies • Belief in need to spread democracy and Christianity
American Expansionism • America acquires Alaska • William Seward arranged the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1884. • Alaska was purchased for $7.2 million • 22 cents an acre • America now acquired a land rich in timber, minerals and oil. • “Seward’s Icebox” turned out to be a bargain.
Expansionism Continued • The Annexation of Hawaii • In the early 1800’s, American Missionaries moved to Hawaii to convert the population to Christianity and start sugar plantations. • In 1891, Queen Liliuokalani became the leader of Hawaii and limited the power of Americans in Hawaii. • American planters staged a revolt and overthrew the queen of Hawaii • With help of US Marines • Set up own government and asked to be annexed into the US. • Annexed 1898
