  1. A Development Education project connecting local and global development issues with adults in Donegal.

  2. Our programme creates awareness, understanding and action in the local community.

  3. How ChangeMakers began... Patsy Toland, Steering group member 2012- 17 Self Help Africa “My idea was to go to structures that already existed like the ETB & rural development programmes.”“Could we incorporate an awareness of the global issues and development issues that exist into what’s already there. How would we bring the global element into something that existed already?” Denise McCool Steering group member Inishowen Development Partnership “I felt that when you’re working in local grassroots community development you can’t look at the local without looking at the global too.”“Thinking about everything that we do; social justice, equality.. you can’t look at development in a local context without looking at how it impacts on the wider society and from that to the global impact also.” Crona Gallagher , Steering group member, 2012- 16 Donegal Education and Training Board “I worked overseas on a women's development project in Swaziland the 1980's so there was a logical progression over a long period to the development of my interest in ChangeMakers.”“For me, ChangeMakers was a logical extension of the work that was already happening in community groups. It was really just a vehicle to widen the focus of this work to include global issues- and so I was very happy for the VEC/ ETB to be involved in it and to support it as best we could.”

  4. ChangeMakers is a unique development education project 1.Of the 49 community development partnerships across Ireland, Inishowen Development Partnership is the only company supporting a development education project within its community programme. 2. Donegal ETB is the only education and training board in the country offering accredited training in global development. 3. ChangeMakers’ development education project is founded on the experience of Self Help Africa tackling inequality and injustice in the developing world. Development education brings the reality of rural communities in the developing world to communities in Donegal.

In almost every section I learned something new that was an eye opener. There were so many things that I did not know about. I also learned about Ireland’s diversity, which I hadn’t understood before.” Caroline Kuyper “ChangeMakers has helped me find my tribe. ChangeMakers provides networks and friendships for people who care about the issues and collectively we can make a difference”

  19. Seeds of Change Development education grants providing learning & resources for local community groups.

  20. Why establish grants? Our ChangeMaker workshops are reaching individuals in the community and raising their awareness about global issues. The next step is to reach local groups. Local groups come together around activities and a desire to participate. Seeds of Change grants are a resource for community groups to undertake new activities that examine global issues, how they impact us locally and how our actions can have an impact. Who received the grants? We’ve provided 11 grants since 2017: Community Groups; Carndonagh, Falcarragh, Dunkineely, Greencastle and Malin Head. Community Garden groups; Donegal Community Garden Network. Local networks; Donegal Women’s Network, Alcohol Forum, Donegal Human Trafficking Working Group.

  21. Barrack Hill Community Garden Through ChangeMakers support the group has; • joined the Donegal Community Garden Network promoting environmental sustainability • hosted a workshop on local sustainable herbal remedies and cosmetics • hosted a cooking workshop with new Syrian families in the community promoting multicultural community links • undertaken the horticulture workshop promoting sustainable water conservation “ChangeMakers gives us ideas or helps us to come up with ideas.” “Our Syrian workshop is one of the most popular things we’ve done. It was a very varied group and bigger crowd than usual.” “From the herbal workshop we learned about making our own creams so you aren’t using the plastics or chemicals of larger pharmaceuticals.” “The water talk was great because it linked the global situation and what we can do in our own gardens.”

Malin Head Community Association Thanks to ChangeMakers Seeds of Change grant, two groups; • attended information talks about global issues • incorporated global themes into their local craft projects “The themes of the quilt and the weaving show what we learned and discussed with ChangeMakers as we worked on our crafts.” As a group we are interested in preserving the skills and crafts of the past so at times it ties in well with ChangeMakers.” Mary Doherty

There was lots of information for us to continue sharing during the coast clean. On reflection we would not have had the skills or knowledge that Grainne (ChangeMakers facilitator) has.” Jane Deane. “We had new people turn up every week for the cleanups which was also encouraging for the future. We also 2 people that started collecting on a daily and weekly basis and collected 2 trailerloads alone. So it does inspire people.

  25. Pobail le Cheile Thanks to Seeds of Change the Falcarragh community group; • undertook a 3 month programme to explore ways of incorporating the SDGs into their community activities. • adopted a theme of Zero Waste and developed a programme fo the community on this issue. • held 5 workshops with different groups in the community explore the issue and develop activities on the theme. • The local community school, youth group and Men’s shed undertook activities at reducing waste after attending workshops. “The grant was a great opportunity to focus our attentions locally on these issues. Looking back at the process I can say we also achieved a measure of sustainability and interest in continuing this work. We can safely say that this small project and budget helped us plant a seed for change in Cloughaneely and it is our job now to nurture it and keep it growing.”

  26. ChangeMakers & Business

  27. Workshop with local businesses on the SDGs Growing inequality, poverty & climate change are a threat to business. Our new workshop for the business sector explored; • how the SDGs can strengthen business • how businesses can contribute to their communities • how business owners can effectively implement the SDGs into their companies All participants reported that they had increased awareness of the SDGs, and the links between the SDGs and local issues of concern, and they are significantly more likely to take action on the Sustainable Development Goals as a result of the participation in the workshop “I will apply my learning in the renewable energy sector” “Future events need to have more involvement from larger companies and institutions that can have a larger impact”. “The workshop has given me a massive insight into the SDGs and their impact locally to internationally”

They developed a film programme around pollution and ChangeMakers facilitated a workshop at the event. The event included inputs from guest speakers and 3 short-film screenings. “Feedback-wise if was one of the most popular events at the festival. The consensus was you have to look at what’s happening locally to effect what’s happening globally. It made people realise the huge issues on a global level and that if we all don’t start taking personal responsibility that’s what feeds into the international problems.” Michael McLaughlin, Festival Director

  32. ChangeMakers & Fairtrade

  33. Fairtrade says ‘you can make a difference’ ChangeMakers promotes Fairtrade across Donegal, currently with a particular focus on Inishowen.
