  9. What to do about Germany? • After meeting at the Potsdam Conference, the U.S., S.U., France, & Britain discussed what to do with Germany. • They agreed: • Disarm Germany • Force the country to pay reparations • Divide both Germany & the capital of Berlin between all four countries.

Plans for Germany • Divided Berlin • Germany was divided among the Allies and the Soviet Union • Berlin was also divided between the two groups • Allied sections were Democratic • Soviet sections were Communist • Berlin is located in the Soviet Union section of Germany • Soviets wanted to control Berlin

The Blockade & the Berlin Airlift • Stalin became angry because East Germany was not doing well • Soviets set up a blockade between Berlin and West Germany • Closed railroads and highways • Allies responded with airlifts that brought food and fuel to West Berlin • Embarrassed Stalin and he ended the blockade
