Assessment Samples • Gr. 4 W3 This is the beginning of a story written by a student who wants to add dialogue. Decide where the three highlighted sections should be placed. Click on them and move them into the correct order. • Gr. 3 W3 Write an ending for the story that tells what the characters say and describes the actions and events.

Smarter Balanced Claim #3link LISTENING • Students will listen to/view a variety of non-print texts, such as directions or procedures in a simulation or hands-on tasks, or view demonstrations, lectures, media messages, speeches, etc. and respond to comprehension and integration/analysis type questions. • Stimuli drawn from range of subject areas • Input can be audio-visual, or just audio • Can be controlled by students as needed • Most will be part of on-line test (CAT)
Smarter Balanced Claim #3link LISTENING • Shorter ( 2-5 minutes) • Audio- or video-recorded presentations in response to a prompt based on stimuli • Scored externally • “Common” summative speaking performance tasks (oral presentations) • Conducted in classroom at selected grade levels. • Scored locally by teachers using the same rubrics and annotated exemplars • Will be certified at the district level and reported to state • An audit will be set up to sample results • Audio or videotaping will be used to capture student performances for auditing purposes
Performance TaskSample-SL Gr. 5 Students will watch two videos and read one article, taking notes. Then they will answer three research questions. Finally they will compose and orally deliver a short speech about the use of digital readers vs. paper textbooks. Students will create and present supplemental materials to enhance their presentation.

Performance Task Gr. 5 You will look at two photographs, view a brief video, and read one literary text and one informational text, taking notes. You will then answer three questions. Finally you will compose a full-length narrative from the point of view of Honus Wagner.
Performance Task Gr. 3 You will read two tall tales and an informational article about tall tales, taking notes. You will then respond to three questions about these sources. Finally you will write a narrative of a tall tale character that has super-human abilities or an extraordinary story to tell.
