Overview • In January 2009, the SAB approved the creation of Pilot Schools within the District based on the Boston Public School Pilot Model • Pilot Schools are schools that operate with five areas of autonomy: * Governance * Staffing * Budget * Curriculum and Instruction * School Calendar/Schedule St. Louis Public Schools
Current Situation • Ten elementary schools (Froebel, Henry, Herzog, Hodgen, Laclede, Lexington, Mason, Shenandoah and Woodward) were identified to write proposals for the Pilot School Model. • Five schools will be selected based on an evaluation rubric. • A recommendation as to which five schools should become conversion Pilot Schools for the 2009-2010 school year will be made to the SAB in May. Timeline • 4/1-5/6 Ten elementary will submit draft proposals for converting their school to Pilot School status. • 5/6- 5/13 Proposals will be evaluated by district level team • 5/13 Selected schools and principals will be notified • 5/15-5/22 Schools selected will select Advisory Board members • 5/15-5/22 Staff members sign Work Condition Waivers • 5/26 Recommendation of pilot schools to the SAB St. Louis Public Schools
Next Steps • Conduct Advisory Board training • Conduct staff Professional Development on the areas of autonomy • Develop an awareness and communication plan for internal staff and larger community regarding Pilot Schools • Coordinate Curriculum, Budget, Human Resources, Operations and Special Education liaisons to support Pilot Schools • Pilot Principals attend summer Autonomy Academy St. Louis Public Schools
