  3. I. Building Support for Imperialism A. By the late 1800s, settlers had filled the western frontier & realized the nation needed new overseas markets to keep its economy strong

Building Support for Imperialism… • Supporters of Social Darwinism believed that nations competed with each other & only the strongest would survive • John Fiske’s idea of Anglo-Saxonism believed that English speaking nations were superior to others • The U.S. was destined to expand overseas & “civilize” others

  5. I. Building Support for Imperialism… • As Americans became increasingly willing to risk war, support for building a modern navy increased • Captain Alfred T. Mahan argued that prosperous nations from the past had large navies to protect their merchant ships • With growing European imperialism threatening America’s security, Congress agreed to build a large navy

  6. II. American Expansion in the Pacific • In 1852, President Fillmore ordered Matthew Perry to go to Japan to negotiate a trade treaty • Japan signed the Treaty of Kanagawa

American Expansion in the Pacific… • In Hawaii, businessmen established plantations to grow sugarcane • The U.S. negotiated a treaty that exempted Hawaiian sugar from tariffs in exchange for rights to a naval base at Pearl Harbor • In 1893, a group of planters forced Queen Liliuokalani to step down 1. U.S. annexed Hawaii in 1898

Diplomacy in Latin America • U.S. wanted to increase the sale of American products to Latin America & kept the Europeans out • James Blaine led efforts to expand American influence there • He proposed the idea that the U.S. & L.A. should work together (Pan-Americanism) • Led to the creation of an organization that worked to promote cooperation among the nations of the Western Hemisphere (The Organization of American States)
