Influential Inventors • Lewis Paul invented the roller spinner which allowed more efficient spinning. • James Hargreaves invented the jenny • John Kay invented the flying shuttle which allowed for faster weaving.
Women • Women and children were the preferred labor for factories • Cheap labor • Women’s roles in the home drastically changed after beginning work in the factories.
Upper Class Citizens • Power shifted from land owners, to factory owners.
Transportation • Tramways were used in the mines. • George Stevenson built the first public railway. -The railway failed due to expenses. • James Watt invented the steam engine.
Improvements in Technology • New crops • Oxen replaced by horses • Insect controlling methods • Metal farm tools replaced wood tools.
Improvements on Coal Mining • Safety lamps for better tunnel vision • Ventilation systems • Gunpowder to blast at coal seams.
Initial Impacts of Industry • Couples married earlier • Housing was provided by the employers • Social classes were switched around • Higher wages in industry, than farming (even though they were still extremely low.) • Typhoid and Cholrea breakouts in the 1800’s.
Modern Effects • Workers unions • Mass transportation of products • Women’s social status’ increased • Industrialized Europe and the European colonies
