Achievements • The Ming Dynasty refurbished, repaired, completed, and extended the Great Wall of China. • The era also restored the Grand Canal. • Towards the end of the Ming Dynasty, an industrial system of production had gradually begun to develop in the region.
The Ming Dynasty’s Decline • The Ming Dynasty faced external attacks from the Manchurian Chinese who attacked Chinese cities that existed in Manchuria, eventually gaining control of all of Manchuria. • Then, in 1644 took over all of China, thus beginning the Qing Dynasty.
Mongols • The Oirat Mongol leader Esen Tayisi launched an invasion into Ming China on July 1449. • The chief, Wang Zhen, encouraged the Zhengtong Emperor to lead a force personally to face the Mongols after a recent Ming defeat. • Marching off with 50,000 troops, the emperor left the capital and put his half-brother Zhu Qiyu in charge. • On September 8, Esen routed Zhengtong's army, and Zhengtong was captured—an event known as the Tumu Crisis. • The Mongols held the Zhengtong Emperor for ransom. • However, this scheme was foiled once the emperor's younger brother assumed the throne under the era name Jingtai.
Forbidden City • The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty. • It is located in the middle of Beijing, China, and now houses the Palace Museum. • For almost 500 years, it served as the home of emperors and their households, as well as the ceremonial and political center of Chinese government. • Built in 1406 to 1420, the complex consists of 980 buildings and covers 7,800,000sq.ft.
Isolationism • At the end of China’s civil war, the country quickly closed off its borders to many outside countries. • It only maintained political ties with the Soviet Union.
