  2. Oprah Winfrey • Oprah Winfrey (born Orpah Gail Winfrey; January 29, 1954) is an American television host, actress, producer; • Winfrey was born into poverty in rural Mississippi to a teenage single mother and later raised in an inner-city Milwaukee neighborhood. • A genetic test in 2006 determined that her maternal line originated among the Kpelle ethnic group, in the area that today is Liberia. • At 13, after suffering years of abuse, Winfrey ran away from home. • When she was 14, she became pregnant, her son dying shortly after birth • She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century; • At age 17, Winfrey won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant. • Winfrey and her partner Stedman Graham have been together since 1986. • They were engaged to be married in November 1992, but the ceremony never took place.

  3. The Oprah Winfrey Show (often simply referred to as Oprah or just O) is an American syndicated talk show, hosted and produced by its namesake Oprah Winfrey, and is the highest-rated talk show in American television history; • The show is highly influential, and many of its topics penetrate into American pop-cultural consciousness; • As of 2011, it is one of the longest-running daytime television talk shows in the United States, having run nationally since September 8, 1986, for over 24 seasons and nearly 5,000 episodes; • The show's last original episode will air on May 25, 2011, with reruns continuing until September 9, 2011.[

  4. History • The show has its roots in AM Chicago as a half-hour morning talk show in 1983; • On September 8, 1986, it was relaunched under its current title and was picked up nationally; • Her current slogan is "Live Your Best Life". • While making the movie Beloved (1997), Oprah then admitted that it brought her back to her responsibility as an admired black woman with a great deal of power and influence.

  5. “I made the decision…in the midst of doing Beloved. I was doing some scenes – Beloved is about an ex-slave, and during that process of doing that I connected to really what slavery had meant, and my own personal ancestry and history connected it to a way I have never before from reading all about Black history and, you know, talking to relatives. And I realized that I had no right to quit coming from a history of people who had no voice, who had no power, and that I have been given this – this blessed opportunity to speak to people, to influence them in ways that can make a difference in their lives, and to just use that.”

  6. Winfrey has interviewed a plethora of political and public figures during the past twenty years. Singer Celine Dion has appeared on the show twenty seven times, the most of any celebrity. • Winfrey's interview with Tom Cruise, which was broadcast on May 23, 2005, has also gained notoriety. Cruise — according to The New York Times — "jumped around the set, hopped onto a couch, fell rapturously to one knee and repeatedly professed his love for his new girlfriend, Katie Holmes." • Non-celebrity guests are generally individuals who have been involved in an extraordinary situation. Examples of these include an episode in the fourth season which featured Truddi Chase, a woman with supposed Multiple Personality Disorder who reported being violently and sexually abused beginning at the age of two.
