  2. Today we will… • Understand the views of Martin Luther King Jnr. • Identify what made him a good leader of the Civil Rights Movement

  3. Early Life Dexter plays his late father in the Rosa Parks story • Born in Atlanta, Georgia • Father a church minister • He experienced segregation/ discrimination first hand • Married Coretta in 1953 • 1st job as pastor of Dexter Avenue Church in Montgomery

Becoming important… • He had been in Montgomery for less than a year when the bus boycott began • His leadership of boycotters made him well known • After the boycott he travelled all over America giving speeches • Wrote his first book in 1958 • ‘I Have a Dream’ speech 1964 • Won the Nobel Peace Prize in the same year

  6. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today.
