Title I Basics Marina Taylor Title I Director Aberdeen School Dist. #58 November 10, 2011
Purpose and Intent of Title I-A • The purpose of Title I-A is to help ensure that all children have the opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach proficiency on challenging state academic standards and assessments. • Title I-A provides funding that may be used to provide additional instructional staff, professional development, extended-time programs, and other strategies for raising student achievement in high-poverty schools. • Targeted Assistance Program or Schoolwide Program • http://www.sde.idaho.gov/site/title_one/
Schoolwide Title I Program • A Schoolwide Program is based upon a comprehensive reform strategy and is designed to upgrade the entire educational program in a Title I school. • A Schoolwide Program allows the staff in a school with 40% of students identified as eligible for Free/Reduced lunch, to redesign the entire educational program to serve all students. • The Aberdeen Elementary School follows the Schoolwide Title I Program
Targeted Assistance Title I Program • A Targeted Assistance program provides educational services to identified individual students who have been targeted based on academic needs. • Services are delivered through extending time for the services, never during the regular instructional time. • The Aberdeen Middle School and Aberdeen High School follow this program.
Similarities Between the Two • The state funding allocation formula is the same. • Funding is based on # of children from low-income families (i.e., eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch). • Any school with greater than 35% of students coming from families with low-incomes is eligible for Title I funding. • The District must rank order eligible children within their boundaries which is used to determine the allocation of Title I funds.
Similarities Between the Two • While eligibility for school funding IS based on the # of students from families with low incomes… selection of students for Title I services IS NOT. In other words, students are eligible for Title I services based on what their academic achievement data show to be academic needs.
