Office 2010 Transition challenges & overviewGeraldine Rossiter Yolanda Rivas Xin Li Suzanne Stillings
Office2010 TransitionSituation • Office 2010 launching to Tier 1 markets for back to school with RTM of 3/5 and GA of May • EN,FR,SP,TC, SC … • HP Image release 2c10 schedule significantly ahead of Office RTM • PLD : 2/18 • FCS: 4/15 • Office 2010 offers several benefits • Office Starter (Word & Excel) - OEM preinstall only • Single image all versions – ensures MUI compliance and provides easier image management • MSFT retail strategy • MLK (discounted price $119): Activation card sold @ every channel—advising purchase of PC w/Office 2010 • Fully Packaged Product (Retail regular price $149) • MSFT will encourage retailers to assort PCs w/Office Starter
Office 2010 TransitionComplications Cycle & schedule mismatch • Current schedule cannot support Office RTM • 2c platforms being released in late 1c Customer experience • Demand for Office Starter (Word & Excel) which can only be offered via OEM preinstalled • No smooth upgrade from old version (uninstall old version & install new one) • Full version is ~600MB download Channel competition • OEM competition to TTM first • Pressure for regions to offer competitive product • Channel special editions scheduled (BBY, QVC) with full version of Office Revenue at risk • ~$10-15M guarantee bounty at risk if we cannot roll within 120-180 days • Expect dip in activation bounties ($2-22/conversion)
Office 2010 TransitionRecommendations & Next Steps • Recommend to escalate to MSFT for DIB solution • Will require executive-level discussion • Given low degree of confidence that MSFT will accommodate our request - develop schedule options & volume impact to adopt option #2 as back up plan
