The Danish National Enrollment system at Bachelor level Evidence on Retention Rates at Aarhus University Vice Dean Peder Østergaard, Phd Education and Culture
Bachelor retention after first year of studies for students enrolled 2008-10 4 Faculties (Arts; School of Business and Social Sciences; Science and Technologies; Health) Statistics on retention and variables describing the enrolment system, students at time of application and faculties (N=11,542 students) Analyses by way of a multiple logistic regression model: Education and Culture
Explanatory variables (1) – main elements in Danish National Enrolment Average grade from High School Range: from 2~ E to 12~ A (ECTS grading scale) Priority of the program studied (First and lower) Enrolled at a special quota 2 - taking into account student special skills and competences, in addition to grades Education and Culture
Explanatory variables (2) – Student characteristics Gender Age Type of High School education: General (stx: 3 year); Commercial (hhx: 3 years); Technical (htx: 3 year); Higher Preparatory Examination (hf: 2 year) Number of gap years Education and Culture
Explanatory variables (3) – specific faculty and interaction effects The Four Faculties (Arts; School of Business and Social Sciences; Science and Technologies; Health) Interaction effects: Faculty * Quota 2 Faculty * Average Grade Education and Culture
Final Model – Explaning retention Education and Culture
Estimates of retention (1): A student with first priority of program; quota 2; stx; three gap years Education and Culture
Estimates on retention (2): A student with low priority of program; quota 1; hf; zero gap years Education and Culture
Implications Important to collaborate with High School Student counselling (before and after entering University) More focus on developing student environment (both academic and social) Experimenting in using quota 2, based on different skills and competences Education and Culture
