  2. Standard 5 Students will understand that microorganisms range from simple to complex, are found almost everywhere, and are both helpful and harmful. Objective 3Identify positive and negative effects of microorganisms and how science has developed positive uses for some microorganisms and overcome the negative effects of others.

Microorganisms Review • Microorganisms are living, one-celled organisms. • They are found in all living things, animals, plants, the air, water, land and all other places of the world. • Microorganisms are so small, you have to use technology to see them. • These organisms are helpful and harmful. • The disease causing organisms are called pathogens or germs. • They are classified by groups and their characteristics. • Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was the first to observe and use his own microscope.

Vocabulary Review • Communicable Disease- Infectious disease usually caused by an infection • Non- Communicable Disease – Disease not caused by an infection (for example diabetes, heart conditions, stokes and classified chronic diseases • Decomposer – the breaking down of dead materials and dead organisms, reusing the energy for growth and renewal • Producer- produce their own food to make energy; photosynthesis • Organism – a living thing that can reproduce , grow and develop. It also can respond to stimuli • Single Celled- organism that is single celled

  6. Click When Finished My Disease Book • For this unit we will make a small booklet using paper books and colored pencils. Write down notes and key points that you can use to study for your final tests for the microorganisms unit. • Remember to include key terms, historical people in microbiology and the five disease causing pathogens. • Be creative and have fun with it! • 5 extra points will be added to test if booklet is completed!

Click to Return to Main Menu Bacteria • Bacteria are tiny, microscopic organisms that are living and can be found everywhere. • Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was one of the first to make this discovery. • Good bacteria can be found in foods like cheese and yogurt. It is also used in the process of our digestive system. It is also used to make medicines to heal. • Bad bacteria can causes sicknesses. This may include strept throat, tuberculosis, whopping cough, tetanus, phenomena and salmonella.

Click to Return to Main Menu Protists • Protists are similar to bacteria, but are much larger. • This group can be unicellular or multi cellular. • Most protists thrive in liquids and water • An example of a major protist is algae • The main diseases that protists produce are Malaria and Sleeping Sickness which are caused by drinking bad water. • Some diseases that involve protists are also carried by mosquitoes

  11. Click to Return to Main Menu Fungi • Fungi includes yeasts, molds and mushrooms • Fungi is its own kingdom • They cannot produce their own food. • Diseases caused by fungi include athletes foot, ringworm and yeast infections.

  12. Click to Return to Main Menu Virus • Viruses cannot grow, reproduce or survive without a host or another living cell. A virus does not have cells to divide. • Viruses are the cause of the common , cold sores, the flu, measles, mumps, chicken pox and HIV.

Click to Return to Main Menu HIV & AIDS • HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus • AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency syndrome • HIV is a virus that attacks white blood cells when transferred through certain body fluids and through mothers to newborns • This disease can destroy the immune system. Once enough white blood cells are destroyed, the immune system is to week to fight back ( which is the result of HIV developed from AIDS). Death is almost always the result of a person with AIDS due to no cure of virus and the body being too weak to withstand the damage.

Home Science Rotations Assignments • Group 1 - Writing Assignment Write a paragraph in the last page of your booklet about what the most interesting thing you learned about diseases and microorganisms. • Group 2 – Art Assignment Create your own Disease and draw a picture of what it might look like. Include colors and explanations if needed. • Group 3 – Microscope Lab Use the microscopes provided to view the different organisms in the slides. Record in your booklet what the slide is, what you saw and your reactions to the slides.
